"Yes and no," she answered. "The Mother of Lies has plans for our daughter. And death isn't always the end."
She took my hand, and suddenly I could see Amara, miles away, dropping to her knees as she felt my death through our bond.
"What have you done, Seraphina?" I whispered, horror dawning as I understood the truth. "What did you trade for Amara's birth?"

"You cannot enter here," the hooded guardian said, blocking my way. "This temple is forbidden to outsiders."
Blood dripped from the cut on my forehead where a branch had struck me during my climb up the mountain. I was tired, hungry, and in no mood for more challenges.
"I am not an outsider," I said, pushing back my hair to show the mark behind my ear – three silver stars in the shape of a triangle. "I am Seraphina of the Starborn. This temple belongs to my people."
