Melissa looked at her son, Lin Mei, who seemed miserable from motion sickness, and couldn't shake the feeling that he was hiding something from her.
"Lin Mei, is this incident related to you?" she asked sharply.
On instinct, Melissa reached out and pinched his ear between her fingers, lifting it slightly.
"It hurts! It hurts! It hurts!" Lin Mei groaned weakly, but no matter how much he ached, he refused to admit anything, even if his life depended on it.
Melissa was the type of mother who liked to be in control, and if she found out that Lin Mei was planning something dangerous, she wouldn't hesitate to make a scene.
However, seeing her son in such a pitiful state softened her heart, and she pushed the nagging question to the back of her mind, at least for now.
Still, Melissa wasn't one to let things go so easily. Earlier, at the banquet, Xiao Lajiao had commented that Lin Mei was too mature for his age, as though he didn't have a child's carefree spirit. The suggestion was that maybe he lacked peers to connect with.
It was Xiao Lajiao's idea that Melissa should take action, and after some thought, she came up with a plan.
The next morning, Lin Mei was still fast asleep when Melissa quietly arranged for him to leave the house.
As expected, the moment they got into the car, Lin Mei fell into a familiar state of motion sickness.
"I just want to know... why are we leaving like this? Ugh!" Lin Mei barely managed to stop himself from vomiting after speaking.
"Baby, why is your motion sickness so severe?" Melissa asked, glancing over at him in confusion. Ever since Lin Mei had used his mutant abilities, she'd suspected there might be lingering side effects, almost calling Professor Charles for advice. But after Lin Mei assured her it wasn't necessary, she decided to let it go for now.
Seeing that Lin Mei wasn't going to answer, Melissa took a set of clothes from the passenger seat and began to help him change. She couldn't resist a little teasing.
"I didn't go anywhere, but last night I signed you up for an elementary school. Surprise!" she said with a proud smile.
"What?" Lin Mei sat up suddenly, overcoming his dizziness momentarily.
The strong vertigo hit him again, causing him to collapse back onto Melissa's slender legs.
"Puchi!"
The driver, who had been silently watching, couldn't help but laugh. It seemed that adults everywhere loved to watch children react when they were forced to go to school.
Melissa knew her son well enough to anticipate some rebellion, so she'd decided to take advantage of his motion sickness to trick him into the car before he could protest.
Lin Mei held back his nausea and asked with a glimmer of hope, "You know I've already completed high school. You must've signed me up for high school, right?"
"Oh?" Melissa said with a playful grin, "I know you're very smart, but I think you should make some friends first. So, I enrolled you in elementary school. I'm sure you'll enjoy it."
"Ugh!" Lin Mei could only express his dissatisfaction with a groan. Being surrounded by a bunch of little kids was torture.
Without hesitation, Melissa changed Lin Mei into his new school uniform.
When they finally arrived at the school, Lin Mei, who had recovered somewhat, stepped out of the car with a reluctant expression. He could already tell this was all his mother's doing. And the welcoming committee made it obvious.
The principal, who was clearly enthusiastic to greet them, came forward with a broad smile. No doubt, Melissa had pulled some strings to make this happen, maybe even becoming the school's benefactor.
"Ms. Melissa, it's such an honor! The teachers and students are thrilled that you chose our school," the principal said, practically beaming.
Melissa gave Lin Mei's shoulder a gentle pat, signaling him to stand straight. Despite the obvious discomfort on his face, she continued, "Mr. Principal, although Lin Mei is young, his intellect is beyond his peers. I hope he'll not only learn here but also make real friends and experience the growth of a normal child."
The principal nodded vigorously, "Rest assured, Ms. Melissa, we'll ensure Lin Mei gets the challenges he needs, but also the warmth and fun that every child should experience."
Melissa smiled with satisfaction and turned back to Lin Mei. She spoke in a tone that brooked no argument, "Remember, no matter how old or smart you are, making friends and living a normal childhood are essential. I want you to be happy here, okay?"
Lin Mei still looked hesitant, but seeing the hopeful look on his mother's face, he sighed and reluctantly nodded, "Okay... I'll give it a try."
It was a classic case of "I've come this far, so I might as well try."
Melissa smiled, knowing her son had already started to accept the situation in his heart. She turned back to the principal, saying, "Thank you for your attention, Mr. Principal. Please don't hesitate to let me know if anything is needed."
The principal quickly agreed, his face lighting up with enthusiasm. "Of course, Ms. Melissa. Rest assured, we will take excellent care of Young Master Lin Mei."
To the principal, Lin Mei was a valuable asset—an opportunity for a steady stream of funds. As long as Lin Mei attended the school, Melissa's generous donations were all but guaranteed. Capitalism had shaped the principal's thinking, and he had learned a few tricks to boost his own profits and reputation.
Under Melissa's watchful gaze, the teaching director led Lin Mei away toward the classroom.
"What kind of class am I being assigned to, Director?" Lin Mei asked, his curiosity piqued. Schools in the United States had varying levels of classes, and he was curious about where he'd fit in.
The director, aware that Lin Mei was no ordinary child, smiled warmly. "Mr. Lin, we're heading to the school's gifted class."
"This class consists of students with strong academic abilities and rapid learning progress."
Lin Mei's expression remained nonchalant. "Oh? So, when you say 'mostly,' you mean there are a few special cases, like me."
The director's face flushed with an unexpected sense of shame. As expected of a child raised by wealthy capitalists. His sharpness is impressive.
He cleared his throat, trying to recover his composure. "Yes, there are a few, but none quite like you—who've already mastered high school-level material on your own."
The director had already heard from the principal about Lin Mei's exceptional abilities, and he couldn't help but feel a mixture of awe and admiration.
