Two days had passed, and Jax was finally ready to train with his one spell.
He entered the sorcerers' training area, a place he had wanted to enter for such a long time. Unlike the warriors' section, this one had no separately lying weapons and instead just had a bunch of items placed around the area in what seemed like a thoughtless pattern.
Most of the items were made of metal, and there was large text on the wall to the side, telling the sorcerers to always face the outside wall for any spell that would likely be used to hit others.
Jax saw a few people practicing fireballs against some sort of metal plate. It seemed that was most likely the spell they received when they started.
Unlike Jax, they could later remove that spell from themselves if they wished to. It was always better when the sorcerer knew fewer spells since it could help improve them.
Jax somewhat understood it now.
The spell was stamped into his mind, a place Gemma said was his Spirit. For one to improve their Navi Stage, they first needed to improve this Spirit, which normally happened on its own when absorbing Navi.
However, if the Spirit was bogged down with too many spells—which was worse the better the spells were—it needed a long time before it could reach a level acceptable for the sorcerer to improve their Navi quality.
While Jax's spell was incredible, since it was the only one, he need not ever worry about falling into that situation.
Jax appeared at a remote corner of the training area and stood before a log post around the same height as him and half as thick.
Jax took a deep breath and channeled his Navi. After having used it once, it became almost instinctive for him to use it. He pulled it out of his body, sending it to his mind where the Spirit lay. There, the Spirit would combine Navi with the spell and activate it.
Jax's spell had two variations: one where he had a target and one where he didn't.
Jax decided to target the post.
The moment he used his 'Divine Threads' spell, this time without the Wind element, a small flicker of light came alive around the post, immediately turning into many white threads.
The threads instantly wrapped around the post, tightly gripping it. Jax put his hands down and got close to look at the result of his spell.
The white threads he had created looked somewhat simple. They were quite thin, and when he tried to pull on them, he could tell that they weren't elastic either. Furthermore, they were quite weak. If he pulled hard enough, he could easily tear them away.
"That's not good."
"Too weak?" Gemma asked.
"Yeah, these threads are not good at all. I will have to use many to make any simple use of them," Jax said.
"Well, you do have that option," Gemma said. "You don't have any restrictions on how many, after all."
Jax nodded. She was not wrong there.
"But if I use a lot, my Navi will run out. With this measly amount of Navi, I could probably never restrain something like that bear," Jax said.
"That bear is a 3-Star Opal monster. You are a 1-Star Opal Sorcerer. Stop comparing the two of you. That bear is far stronger than you are."
Jax sighed. She was right again.
He looked at the strings again and brought a small knife from his Inventory. The thread was wrapped around the log post nearly 15 times, but after Jax snipped just a single one, the entire thread came undone.
"This is not good," he said. As he pulled the thread away, something caught his eye. He quickly looked at the thread with a closer eye, frowning. "Hey Gemma, where are the ends of this thread?"
The thread was a single piece from start to end, and that start and end were something Jax had just made after cutting it into two. This was weird.
Jax tried searching for another place where the ends of the threads might have been tied, but after not finding anything, he used the spell again, this time making just a single loop around the post.
When the thread wrapped around the post, Jax was surprised. "Holy shit! There is no end. It's just one circular thread."
He snipped the thread again, and it easily fell away.
"That's it. That's why the moth's threads were so easy to get out from. You make one snip, and the entire thread comes undone. You need to make a lot of loops with a single thread for the friction to stop it from coming undone."
"Hmm. I see your point," Gemma mused. "But that is how the spell works."
"Yes," Jax said. "But thankfully, it doesn't have a cooldown."
He targeted the log post again and used the spell. This time, he used the spell multiple times in a short duration. Many strings came to life at once, almost as if created at the same time, and wrapped around the log post.
Jax and Gemma both went up close to look at it. While it looked the same as the last time, they could tell that each loop was an individual wrap. Cutting it would do nothing to the rest.
"Yes!" Jax whispered a shout. "That's way better than what I need."
"You'll have to practice this many times," Gemma said. "Using a skill many times at once can give you a lot of mental fatigue."
"Alright," Jax said and willed the threads to disappear. A portion of the Navi spent on them returned to him.
"Now, for the other way."
If he did not target something with the spell, he could create the threads from his finger.
Jax pointed his index finger toward the post from 10 feet away and used the spell.
A thread came out from his finger and limped onto the ground before him, pooling up at the bottom until Jax stopped.
"Oh…" He looked at the string attached to his finger and on the floor. "That wasn't as exciting as I had hoped it would be."
He pulled up the weak thread that would easily snap in two if he pulled a bit too hard.
"This part of the spell might not be useful at all."
