The next week was full of boring routine. On the other hand, no force majeure, which couldn't have been better. I ended up immersing myself in company business. That was the case until Wednesday, when some students from Midtown High School didn't show up for a trade show of new prosthetics and implants that will go on sale in the future. I went out to them in person, said hello and started giving them a tour. And all would have been fine, but my attention was caught by one girl who was brown, with shoulder-length hair, big brown eyes, and a graceful face. She straddled the line between childlike cuteness and gradually emerging adult femininity. I think in a couple of years this young lady will shine. Her baggy clothes and not-so-stylish glasses concealed her appearance, which was extremely strange for this world.

What was so interesting about her besides the look of a true nerd? It was a curious question and difficult to answer unequivocally. She was definitely not an ordinary person. That said, I couldn't figure out who this girl was. She didn't look like a mutant. I've seen a lot of them and all sorts of different ones. She wasn't a magician either. Not an alien, either. Someone's genetic experiment? It's closer, cos there were some bodily changes, but it's not the same. The girl had a connection to something. I couldn't trace the connection, but I realised that the girl's powers were complex. Some of the power came from physical changes, some from this strange source. Could it be a connection to God? It could be. Also, the girl had a sense of anger at herself and bitterness of loss somewhere deep inside. I think she blamed herself for the death of someone close to her. I've learnt to understand these things over time, so I'm not sure I'm wrong this time.

- ... So do you have any more questions? - I asked the students with a friendly smile. But something tells me that most of those present were interested in me, not in some boring iron. The girls were emitting unambiguous emotions.

- Yes, sir! - The girl I was interested in raised her voice, overcoming her embarrassment. - And why not change the shape of this prosthesis to this variant?

She showed me a notebook with a drawing of a slightly modified prosthesis.

- Hmm, that's an interesting concept," I said, working out in my mind whether it made sense. It was probably worth a try. This way I could lower the price a little more, lighten the construction and reduce the amount of material, with almost no loss of reliability. That's what an outsider's perspective is all about. - What do you think of this sample, young lady?

The girl blushed and stammered her thoughts. I gestured to one of the employees to continue the excursion, and I myself began to listen attentively to the schoolgirl. Apparently, she was one of those prodigies of this world that in the garage from old spare parts create time machines and anigilator cannons. She had an extraordinary mind, but she didn't have my knowledge. There wasn't that kind of knowledge on Earth yet.

The girl, having got into her element, quickly dropped her shyness. I listened and from time to time asked questions or corrected her in some moments. When the schoolgirl had expressed all her ideas, she became embarrassed and panicked again.

- Well, I'm overwhelmed," I told her honestly. - Your intelligence is incredible.

- Oh, come on, ha-ha! You flatter me! - The girl whispered embarrassedly, blushing almost completely.

- No, I'm not. I only told the truth. And yes, will you tell me your name? I was so listening to your ideas that I completely lost sight of it.

- Petra Parker," she chirped.

- Parker? - I said, beginning to realise who she was. So far, everything was coming together. Midtown High, last name, unusual abilities, brains. Not to jump to conclusions, though.

- Yeah. Is there something wrong?

- No. It's just I knew a Parker a long time ago. You might say in a past life ha ha ha ha ha. Well, I'm Kyle Smith. Listen, Petra, how would you feel about me using what you said to modify prosthetic limbs?

- It would be good for people, so I'm all for it! - the girl said firmly, clenching her fists.

- Thank you. You know.

- Mr Smith! I was interrupted by one of my staff, Alice Gale. - You have a scheduled meeting with Stark Industries in three minutes.

- Oh, business be damned. Well, Petra, it was very nice to meet you. You have a lot of potential. I hope we meet again," Parker said with a smile.

- 'I-It was nice to meet you too, Mr Smith!

- Just Kyle. Goodbye.

- Goodbye!

As we walked away, I pulled out my cheque book and wrote the amount in it, then turned to Alice.

- Give this cheque to Petra Parker at Midtown School and tell her that if she's willing, I'm willing to hire her anytime. And tell her the terms and conditions of the deputy head of the department. For starters. This girl has great potential and I would like to see her in my company.

- I see," the woman said in surprise, looking at the amount.

- Are the Stark representatives here yet?

- Yes, sir," she replied, coming to her senses. - They're waiting outside your office.

- Good. I'll go entertain them.

Digression.

Petra Parker had had a busy day today. Especially the trip to the Spectrum skyscraper. There they were met and given a tour by Kyle Smith himself. Despite his position, he was practically their age. The guy said some interesting things, but most of the girls just stared at him. And Parker couldn't blame them.

And when Kyle Smith turned to the students, the hell Petra had to talk to him! At first she was terribly embarrassed, and then she was blown away. Now remembering that moment, the girl wanted to hide somewhere and scream in shame. But it wasn't worth it to do such a thing on a school bus. Parker's nerdiness was enough of a fame as it was.

It was good to see that Kyle reacted calmly to the stream of consciousness and even flattered her. The girl had low self-esteem even after his words, so she could hardly believe in the sincerity of the young businessman.

At school, however, disgruntled girls were picking on her. They kept asking what Smith had found in Parker, since he had decided to stay to talk to her. I barely escaped them. Luckily the school day was over and Petra was on her way home.

Only there was a surprise waiting for her. Once inside, she saw her whole family gathered in the hall, actively talking to a vaguely familiar woman. But before she could remember where she had met the guest, her older sister Jade called out to her:

- "Petra, come here!

- What's going on? - Petra asked.

- Someone's here to see you," Aunt May replied.

- I'll get undressed.

- Okay.

When she was sure that no one was looking at her, Petra instantly flew the remaining distance to the room where she lived with Jade and quickly changed her clothes and went into the hall where the guest, the girl's two aunts, her own sister and cousin were having tea. Two more cousins and an aunt were now at work.

- So what happened? - The girl asked, sitting down at the table while Aunt May poured her tea.

- My name is Alice Gale. I work for Mr Smith, the head of Spectrum, the company you visited today, Miss Parker," she interjected. Petra immediately remembered that she had seen her in the company's skyscraper. - 'And Mr Smith has authorised me to give you this. Please.

With these words she handed the girl the cheque. Petra took it on automatic and turned to the guest:

- "Erm, but what's he in for? Stop! P-five hundred thousand?!?!?! E-isn't that a joke?!

- That's right, Miss Parker.

- Wow! Sis, what did you do to get that kind of money? - her brother Alexander asked in surprise.

- It's nothing like that," she said, still unable to believe what was happening. - We just talked to Mr Smith about the design of the prostheses and a few other things.

- Mr Smith was very appreciative of the little things," Alice said, adjusting her stylish glasses. - Moreover, he is ready to hire you right now as a member of our staff with an initial salary of one hundred and twenty thousand dollars a year, subsequent career growth, regular bonuses and full medical insurance. We'll take care of the emancipation issue as well.

- One hundred and twenty thousand! Petra, do it! That's twice the average salary! And health insurance too! - began to persuade Petra brother.

- So, Alex, first of all, calm down! - Aunt Anna sternly interrupted him. - This whole thing looks suspicious. Miss Gail, why so generous with our little girl? Five hundred thousand is a lot of money.

- It's simple. You can think of it as payment for improving Spectrum's products. As for the rest, let me put it this way. Miss Parker has a brilliant mind, which my employer has come to appreciate. He believes you have a bright future ahead of you. And naturally, like any intelligent man, he's forward-looking. Why not invite such a promising person to join us right away?

- But I'm still a schoolgirl.

- If you look at it that way, Mr Smith should still be at school. But instead, he's completed all of his schooling with an honours degree. I don't think it's a problem for you to impress my boss.

- Still, it's unexpected, and I don't think I'm that good," she said with embarrassment.

- Miss Parker, I don't know about technology and science, but I know that Mr Smith knows how to pick people. And if he thinks so highly of you, there must be some objective reason for it," she said, adjusting her glasses.

- And yet I cannot accept such a sum," Petra concluded, holding out the cheque to Alice with a little inner resistance. - 'Please take it away. It's too much money.

- Sis, what are you doing?! You've basically been paid! Why would you refuse?! It's practically two of our annual earnings! - Alexander was indignant, splashing his hands.

- As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with my brother," Jade said, folding her arms across her chest.

- Hey!" the boy said indignantly.

- But naturally it's your choice," she finished.

- That's right. It's up to you, Petra," Aunt May said, to Anna's nods of agreement. - But know that if anything, we'll live without them. Maybe not richly, but on our own.

- Miss Parker, let's do this," Kyle Smith's subordinate said calmly, looking at Petra. - You will think about my boss's offer and about keeping this cheque. No one is restricting you from doing so. You can respond at any time. There's no rush. If you're not interested, just give the cheque and tell Mr Smith in person. They'll let you in.

- All right. So be it," replied the girl after a while.

- That's fine. Thank you for your hospitality," Alice said, standing up from the table.

- Are you leaving already? - Aunt Anna asked.

- Alas, things will not do themselves. And before I go, let me give you some advice, young lady. This money will certainly be good for your family. You got it honestly, so you have every right to use it. All right, then. I'll see you later.

- I'll see you out," Petra said as her family said goodbye to their guest.

After Alice Gale left, she told her relatives that she was tired and went to her room, staring at the cheque. She had a lot of thinking to do.

The end of the retreat.- ...The girl wanted to refuse, but I managed to convince her to think about it.

- Did you? Let's hope she does.

- Is she really that good, Mr Smith? - Alice Gale, one of my assistants, asked me, adjusting her glasses in a trademark gesture.

- Yes, or I wouldn't have bothered. Well, she deserves what you've given her. Her ideas will serve us well.

- I see. Then may I be excused?

- Yes, Mrs Gale.

As the woman left, I began to think. Having Parker's brains for my own personal use was very tempting. I hope she makes the right choice. However, when she graduates, she'll probably come to me when she's looking for a proper job. Moo-ha-ha-ha-ha! Oh, I'm so mean! Well, I'd better get my business done for the day and meet up with the girls.

The next day I had some free time, so I decided to talk to Patriot in person. I had to be careful not to be spotted by the agents following him. In the end, we met in the mental space I'd created to simulate a normal city. I had told John beforehand that I wanted to see him, so the super was ready.

- Hello Head! - The guy said hello as soon as he saw me.

- Hello John. How are you, what's new?

And he started telling me literally every little thing. I can't blame him for that, because until recently he was a prisoner in Hydra's lab. It so happened that, looking for a place for a base, we came across the underground bunker of these unpleasant comrades. And to hell with them, but I felt a powerful Desire. That's what stopped me from looking for a new place. Once inside with the help of my abilities, I headed towards the source of such a strong feeling and found a young "true Aryan" right from the posters. Except he was locked in a very strong cage. Pulling him into a mental space, I started a conversation. His name was John Morris, and he was a mutant with tremendous strength, durability, and speed. Not something unique, but a fairly balanced set. Except there were problems with ranged attacks. They had put him here a long time ago, trying to understand how the abilities worked. They wanted to create a super soldier with similar abilities. Nothing out of the ordinary. A standard wish in this world, for almost any organisation.

Naturally, Morris didn't like it, and he wanted out. So I offered him a contract. The lad didn't hesitate long, but asked about his duties. When he learnt that I would not interfere with his freedom, he agreed at once. At the same time, I pumped him up and made him a local Homelander. Immediately afterwards, John unleashed his fury on the people in the compound. It was quite a massacre, but it was a good thing for those butchers and butchers. I almost joined the raging mutant when I saw what they were doing.

Now the guy was going to be my agent of influence among superheroes, and very soon he would be joined by another of my subordinates. All she has to do is adjust to her powers and she can start being a hero. But that's another story.

- Good, John. By the way, have you noticed that you are being followed?

- Yeah," he said sourly. - I'm sick of it. I wish I could squash them like flies.

I can understand that. Still, such intrusive attention is very annoying. And after years of captivity mutant does not suffer humanity. But that doesn't matter. The main thing is that he is absolutely loyal to me after the rescue.

- That's okay. We'll just have to wait until we have the right amount of light. Then everything will change.

- I know, but that doesn't make it any easier," John said tiredly. - By the way, when will there be a resupply?

- Soon. In a week, I think. In the meantime, keep up the good work. I think you'll be invited to join one of the hero associations sooner or later. And then you'll be my agent.

- Gladly.

After chatting for a while, I let the guy go on with his heroic activities and teleported to the Monolith Club. The name referred to a famous stone that could grant wishes. It was this club that signed over the Diaz doppelganger to me, or rather to Pluto. As soon as all the paperwork was done, the building was rebuilt from a run-down nonsense to a respectable nightclub. All that was left was to advertise it and clean up the entire neighbourhood I held. The first was done by my contractors, the second by the inhabitants of this very neighbourhood for money. The rules of behaviour were also explained to them, so that there would be no mishaps. I found a job for someone, rendered various services to someone, with further work and so on. At the same time, there were not as many people in need as I thought.

As a result, the neighbourhood had not been so clean and quiet for a long time, which had a good effect on the desire to visit my club. I needed it to launder gang money and find new contractors, especially from the ranks of the golden youth.

In the meantime, Abi, Nata, and a couple of other girls and I went to a shootout that Los Setas had arranged for us. These guys were made up of deserters from elite units, which seriously increased their combat potential. The stumbling block was my decision to keep the drug dealers out. Naturally it didn't solve the problem, but at least it reduced the amount of consumption along with improving the lives of the locals. Naturally I didn't want to see people being jerked around when they came in like they were possessed. At least there were fewer addicts in this world than in the first.

And naturally my decision didn't endear me to the Latino fighters. Plus, I think they were being encouraged by someone from another group. Who exactly doesn't matter, because I was planning to deal with them all in the future anyway.

And indeed the guys turned out to be quite serious enemies, having managed to spoil our blood, but they still couldn't take out the pumped up people. The firefight lasted only a couple of minutes, after which I planned to get rid of the corpses. But I was prevented from doing so by a spider web that flew into my face. I was well covered by an invisible barrier, which was now splattered with a white, sticky substance that I brushed off with a single hand.

- Everybody freeze! Hands and feet up, or I'm not responsible for me! - came a girl's voice from above, filled with righteous anger.

I looked in the direction from which the sound was coming and saw an athletic female figure hanging upside down from a spider web, wearing a very remarkable costume.

- What a sight! - I exclaimed, smiling broadly as my subordinates stood warily without making any sudden movements. - Spider-Girl herself had come to our doorstep! To what do we owe the honour?

- You killed those people! Either you let yourselves be wrapped in a web, or I'll give you a good fist bump! - Parker said, without attacking. Hmm, weird. Why would she want to talk to us? We're clearly criminals. There's no point in talking to us. - I think the police are waiting for you!

- Not us, life is like that," I told her, shrugging my shoulders and spreading my hands. - As for killing those "people", as you put it, I can assure you they attacked first. Plus they were going to sell drugs on my property. It was an admissible defence.

- Let the police handle it!

- You know, I'm not scheduled to meet with our valiant defenders today.

Apparently tired of listening to me, Petra moved to the side of our group with the help of the web, and then shot streams of white substance at my subordinates, apparently deciding to incapacitate them first. I didn't prevent it, deciding to see how they would deal with a serious threat.

- Fucking hell! How many times do you have to duck?! - Natalie snarled, trying to hit the sluggish opponent. It wasn't working so well.

The rest of the girls used all their strength to stop the Spiderwoman from doing what she wanted. The fight was going on with mixed success, because on one side was experience, technology and superhuman capabilities, and on the other side was a sense of danger and even greater superhuman capabilities.

I, on the other hand, stood to the side and watched the battle with interest. Petra was twirling, jumping and doing other incredible tricks, sometimes escaping from a blow or shot at the last moment. This really pissed off the girls, from which they began to make mistakes and gradually flew away from the powerful blow of a deceptively fragile girl, then found themselves entangled in a web up to their ears. So I was left alone with the superheroine, while my subordinates were either trying to come to their senses or mooing angrily with their mouths covered.

- Clap, clap, clap!

- Bravo! Amazing sight! - said cheerfully to Petra, who turned round to me, clapping her hands, hanging her cane on the bend of her elbow. - Quite impressive! I think it'll be a good lesson for the girls that you shouldn't think you're stronger than everyone else.

- You're too calm, Mr. Out-of-the-last-century. Do you really think that because you're a man you can get away with it? - Petra asked, bracing herself.

- Who knows? But I'm counting on something else," he told her confidentially, taking off his cylinder and hanging it on his cane, which was frozen in the air.

- And what is that?

- That I won't meet the police today. Now attack, young lady.

The Spiderwoman didn't have to beg and as soon as I finished speaking, she tore upwards at top speed with the help of the web. The girl decided to come at me from behind, but I was fast enough, so I just left the trajectory of the kick and pushed her a little. Petra instantly twisted round and prevented me from consolidating my success by flying towards the nearest wall. The heroine pushed herself away from her like a spring and flew into me. I tried to hit her neck with a predatory look on my face, thus knocking her out quickly, but Parker was able to push off my arm and thus twist around. Then came an attack from her, kicking me in the side of my long-suffering head. I put up a block and threw my wiry opponent aside. My next blows again failed to reach Petra, forcing her into a defensive position.

I had to figure out how to get around her instincts. To begin with, I began to strike reflexively, without thinking about it at all. That didn't work. Then, in parallel with the fight, I tried to close myself off from the very Web of Life and Destiny, which was the source of this spider-sense. The matter was complicated by the fact that I did not really understand what it was. If only I could dig into Petra's connection with this very Web... Oh, dreams, dreams.

Since I couldn't beat her gracefully, I decided to do it like a barbarian, namely at the expense of the difference in stats. I accelerated even more and began to push the girl, not giving her a moment to assess the situation and think. She still fought back, but not as vigorously as in the beginning.

So I gradually pinned her against the wall and began to hit her with my hands. Periodically she would wiggle away and then my fists would pierce the wall, showering Petra with red crumbs. Something she took tangentially, minimising the damage. The girl tried to counterattack and even occasionally hit me, but it didn't matter. Even without the energy barrier and with Iredzumi disabled, my body along with E.P.O.S.S. was too strong.

At one point, Parker was able to use the webbing to scurry upwards to regroup and impose the fight on more favourable terms. She was now trying to hit predominantly with her feet from angles that were uncomfortable for me. Once again I admired the girl's stretching and chased away thoughts of what she could do in bed and started a new round.

Even though this fight had lifted my spirits, it had to end. There was enough to do without it. And the girl gave me the opportunity to finish the fight without noise and dust. Petra made a bad leg kick for the sake of preventing me from taking a more favourable position. As I dodged it, I managed to grab the heroine's limb and pull her towards me for a punch under the breath.

- Khaaaa! - Parker whimpered at that, and I didn't wait for the battle babe to wake up, but I slammed the edge of my palm into her neck, knocking her out for the next hour.

- Ugh, she was driving me crazy! - I complained to my subordinates, putting the heroine on the ground and shaking off my perfectly clean jacket.

- Mmmmm! - Mumbled Abi, shaking in her cocoon.

- What is it darling? Do you want me to take a picture of you? Right away! - said to her, pulling her phone out of her pocket.

- MMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!

- Okay, smile girls, you're not being filmed by a hidden camera! Eeeeee! Done!

After taking pictures of the moaning and writhing subordinates, he treated the most injured first, then destroyed the cobwebs and corpses.

- Boss, you're a villain! - Abi was indignant after the release.

- Of course I'm a villain! What did you think?

- Please delete the photo!

- Nope. Let them remain as a memento so you'll remember to be careful.

- Damn, that little one was a real pain in the arse! It's like she anticipated our every blow! - grumbled one of my subordinates.

- She did. She has the ability to sense threat," I said, looking at the downed Spiderwoman.

- What are we going to do with her boss?

- Nothing. Let her frolic at her leisure.

I stashed Parker in the rubbish bin and commanded the girls to go to our base. I think I'll have a non-alcoholic drink, cos my throat's a little dry. And let the heroine take a nap.

Digression.

Waking up was definitely not the best. My battered body ached with every breath. And the smell was not very pleasant. With a grunt, Petra climbed out of the rubbish bin she'd found herself in. But no. I see how. The bandits and that scary man had thrown her in there. I just don't know why. I don't think they thought the girl was dead.

Slightly recovered, the young heroine headed home on the way thinking about what had happened. When she heard the gunshots, she immediately rushed in the direction from which the sounds were heard. Except the girl was too late. There, apparently, was a firefight between two gangs and one had already shot their opponents. Petra felt a hidden threat from the only man who was part-time leader. That was why she didn't attack him immediately, hesitating and making inappropriate conversation. Gradually the sense of danger from the man diminished, and the girl decided to attack his subordinates, realising with her spider sense that he would not interfere.

And so it came to pass. Having barely dealt with the bandits, Parker switched to the ringleader. And here for the first time in her modest career she learnt what it means almost complete helplessness. The enemy was not only fast, strong and strong, in addition to this had a lot of combat experience. He also fought somewhat ostentatiously and theatrically, not putting all his strength to win. It was unnerving. Petra was seriously exhausted only after the battle with his minions and began to realise that she was gradually losing. All her tricks did not give the proper result. And at one point she made a mistake as a result of which the man caught the girl and knocked her out. So why didn't he capture or kill her? Or maybe he recognised her identity and decided to blackmail her?!

Haunted by these dark thoughts, Parker made her way to the house. There she climbed under the shower, examining the bruises all over her body and washing away the sweat. Finished with hygiene, the girl slowly snuck into her room and fell into a deep sleep, the moment her head touched the pillow.

All the next week the heroine was on pins and needles, waiting for a messenger from the bandits to come to her, with an offer impossible to refuse. But a day passed, three, five, and nothing happened. All this time Petra did not think of the situation with the cheque, for it was somewhat out of her mind.

She found an outlet only in her evening patrols of Queens. While saving people or helping the police, the heroine could forget about the Sword of Damocles hanging over her.

But one evening chasing a car of robbers she flew far enough away from her neighbourhood. The criminals were stopped and Parker was about to go to her neighbourhood, but for some reason she decided to fly over one of the nearest alleys. For some reason she wanted to take that particular route. It was Kyle Smith's title that was in that alleyway, but Petra would never know that.

Relaxedly flying on a web over the evening city, the heroine caught a glimpse of a very familiar man. It was exactly him! The bandit was now walking alongside the woman Parker had managed to defeat that day. They were talking about something and standing sideways to Petra. Without a second's hesitation, the girl attacked them. Even though the opponent was stronger, but if he didn't have time to react, it wouldn't make any sense!

And it worked out more than well with the woman. Parker was able to web the bandit to the wall opposite, but with the man things went wrong again. His body was protected by some sort of energy barrier that became visible at the moment of the attack. The bandit instantly tore off his web and very quickly attacked Petra with a hail of blows. But she was already aware of his capabilities and was able to dodge.

- What people! Young lady, was last time not enough for you?! - cheerfully asked the man, attacking and speaking at the same time, not having trouble breathing.

- What can you do, heroism requires sacrifice! - with more difficulty than the opponent replied the girl, spinning like a frying pan.

- Oh-ho-ho-ho! I can literally feel the unquenchable flame burning in you! Well, if that's the case, then I should show some respect!

At that moment, Petra's spider sense roared, warning of danger on all sides. She managed to twist to miss the blades that appeared from David's stars in the air, leaving her with five shallow scratches.

- First blood on me. Can we stop this? You can't win," the man said calmly, waving his hand and releasing his companion, who was staring with hidden anger at Petra, who was perched on a lamppost.

- 'I'll say no.

- Boss, let me give this little one a good thrashing!..!

- I'm sorry, you can't handle her now. I'll do it myself.

Petra didn't listen to what he would do and attacked again. She planned to hit the man harder, hoping to break through his defence. But before she could cover even half the distance, the girl used the web to hover in the air and then flew backwards, wanting to avoid danger. Only this time it was more complicated. The man literally surrounded her with energy constructs, this time with chains, which began to move as if alive and trying to grab the heroine. She used all her strength and a little experience to somehow get to the summoner, but everything was in vain.

As soon as only one of Parker's legs was captured, after a second of desperate attempts to break free, all of her limbs were entangled in chains. Her body, crucified in mid-air, floated smoothly up to the jovial man.

- Good night.

That was the last thing the girl heard before the blow sent her into the darkness of unconsciousness. But it didn't last too long according to the heroine's subjective time. It was like a moment had passed.

- Wake up, darling! - began to break through the oblivion to Parker someone familiar, disgustingly cheerful voice.

- Ha-ha-ha!

Sneezing and coughing Petra began to come to herself. She was in some room, sitting on a chair, and opposite to her was the very thug. He, without changing himself, was cheerful and cheerful. The man, bringing his face close to Parker and with a wide smile, behind which lurked something dangerous, asked:

- Spider-Girl, do you already know what... Insanity is?

End of Retreat.
