CHAPTER 1 – The Unexpected Kiss
The afternoon was calm, and I was lounging in front of my house, lazily scrolling through TikTok while sipping on a chilled bottle of Fearless. The quiet was shattered when my friend Ade burst in, panting heavily.
"Guy, guy!" he called out, trying to catch his breath.
I raised an eyebrow. "What's wrong with you?"
"Bro, Kola is hosting a party this evening!" Ade announced with excitement.
I scoffed, shaking my head. "So that's why you're running like a tiger is chasing you?"
Ade grinned sheepishly.
Kola was a big name back in school. A year ahead of us, he was not only the deputy SUG president but also the course rep of Computer Engineering. His parties were legendary, wild, and the kind of thing students talked about for weeks.
"Guy, you have to be there," Ade insisted. "You haven't been enjoying yourself since this semester started!"
I sighed. "You know I came to school to study, not to waste my time at parties."
"Just this once, bro! Why are you acting like you don't enjoy flexing? C'mon, don't be a party killer!"
Twenty minutes of back-and-forth argument later, Ade finally won.
"Oh, and by the way," he added with a sly smile, "Ruth is coming too."
I froze. "Ruth? Going to a party? God is great!"
Ruth was one of the smartest girls in my department—Microbiology. Light-skinned, intelligent, and composed, she was the kind of girl everyone respected. She was also my close friend, though I sometimes wished she was more than that.
"Yeah, she's following us. So get dressed; it's already 4 o'clock."
With that, I grabbed my phone and Fearless bottle and headed inside to get ready. Ade followed, still grinning like he had just won a lottery.
Five minutes later, I was set. We then headed to Ade's place so he could also dress up. Seven minutes after that, we arrived at Ruth's house, and she was already waiting. She looked stunning in a pink long gown with red floral designs.
We took a taxi to the party.
"Oh, my friend Bimbo will be at the party too," Ruth mentioned casually.
"Who is Bimbo?" Ade asked curiously.
"She's a close friend of mine," Ruth replied.
Two minutes later, we arrived at the venue, and the party was already in full swing. The DJ was on fire, the bass shaking the ground. People were vibing, dancing, and spraying money like it was nothing. The air smelled of barbecue, expensive perfume, and youthful energy.
"Welcome, baby girl!" a voice squealed from the crowd.
A tall, curvy girl in a short black dress ran toward Ruth and hugged her tightly.
"Let's go inside, ladies," Ade said, leading the way.
We found a table and ordered drinks with assorted beef and popcorn. The night was just getting started.
Moments later, Ruth stood up. "I'm going to dance."
"Go party, my girl!" Bimbo cheered.
Ade wasted no time and followed Ruth to the dancefloor, leaving me alone with Bimbo.
We started chatting, and before I knew it, she leaned closer.
"Do you have a girlfriend?" she asked, locking eyes with me.
I was caught off guard but answered immediately. "No."
"Same here," she said. "Relationships these days are just too stressful."
We talked for several minutes, her voice smooth and confident. Then, out of nowhere, she reached for my hand. I let her. She ran her fingers over my palm, her touch slow and deliberate.
A strange feeling stirred inside me.
She suddenly let go. I stared at her, confused.
"Can I have your hand?" I asked.
She gave it back, and this time, I massaged her palm gently, taking my time.
She exhaled softly, enjoying it. And for some reason, I enjoyed it too.
"Let's step outside for a minute," I whispered.
She nodded and followed me out.
The night air was cool, the distant sounds of the party blending into the background. We stood there in silence, staring at each other.
Then, without warning, Bimbo stepped forward and kissed me on the lips.
I didn't pull away.
I didn't even think.
I just let it happen.
