Chapter 13 - Dark Farm 9

Wen Xirou suddenly broke into a cold sweat. She had almost violated the rules. Thankfully, Big Shot had stopped her just in time.

Wen Xirou shut her mouth, unwilling to bring it up again. Instead, she looked at Wan Qian with growing gratitude and concern.

The interns, assigned different tasks, followed the newly promoted heads of the Production and Cleaning Departments, leaving.

Only Wan Qian was led to the office by the butler.

The office had already been cleaned, with not a speck of dust on the desks or chairs, and the floor gleamed like a mirror. Wan Qian looked around the room but couldn't spot any areas that seemed to need cleaning.

"Or, do you have any other thoughts? I can arrange for you to work with the interns instead," the butler noticed Wan Qian's expression and suggested with a smile.

"Oh, there's no need for that," Wan Qian shook her head.

"Then I'll leave now. If you need anything, Ms. Wan, just call me."

After the butler left, Wan Qian felt too embarrassed to just sit there and rest.

She grabbed a cloth, walked over to the massive bookshelf, and tried to find any dust she could wipe off.

To her surprise, even the most tedious area to clean, the bookshelf, was spotless.

Not a speck of dust could be found between the books or in the corners of the shelf, leaving no room for Wan Qian to do anything.

Reluctantly, she put the cloth down and decided to pass the time by pulling a book from the shelf.

The covers of the books were unusual. Only a few were made of paper, while some were made of satin, and many others were of materials Wan Qian didn't recognize. The texture felt like soft, delicate leather.

The words on the covers were mostly in a language she couldn't understand, though a few were in Chinese. Wan Qian stared at the books for a while, dazed.

Her great-uncle really is quite the artistic person, collecting so many obscure books. As she sighed in admiration, she reluctantly picked out a book written in Chinese from the many on the shelf.

The title was "Safety Driving Techniques for Lawn Mowers".

Wan Qian flipped it open. Three minutes later, she closed the book again.

Confirmed—this wasn't the kind of book her brain could understand.

She didn't return it to the shelf but instead placed it on the desk. The large wooden desk only had the book she just put down and a lonely computer on it.

Wan Qian sat down at the desk, deciding to play a game on the computer. After all, no one else was around.

The computer looked outdated, like it had been abandoned for years. When Wan Qian pressed the power button, nothing happened for half a minute.

She started to wonder if the computer was broken when the power light finally came on, and a strange icon appeared on the screen.

Before Wan Qian could make sense of it, the icon disappeared, and the desktop appeared.

On the desktop, a bloody line of text popped up abruptly—"Do not look at the surveillance!!!"

The last exclamation mark left a long, ominous trail on the white background, as if someone had written it in a twisted, deformed manner with their final strength before dying.

Upon seeing this line of text, Wan Qian instinctively felt a bit uncomfortable.

"...This handwriting is awful!" she muttered as she prepared to move the mouse to click on the Spider Solitaire game that came with the computer.

But to her surprise, the cursor moved on its own, heading straight for the "Surveillance" icon in the top right corner.

At the farm.

Wen Xirou was unlucky to be assigned to clean the lawn with the burly man and the fat guy. After the head of the cleaning department led them here, he turned and left.

The farm appeared old, but it was vast in size. Employees assigned to different areas rarely had the chance to encounter one another.

Though she was very worried about Wan Qian and Xiao Lin, being unable to see anyone meant that worrying alone was useless.

She took a moment to steady her thoughts before starting to clear the weeds around the lawn with the tools she was assigned.

The burly man was reluctant to move. When he saw no one was watching, he kicked the fat guy. "You go do the work."

Wen Xirou glanced at them. Though she wasn't keen on dealing with a guy like the burly man, in this unfamiliar haunted realm, the more living people there were in the early stages, the better.

Wen Xirou reminded, "Although that head of the cleaning department led didn't give us any specific task when it left, only asking us to tend to this lawn, at least pretend to do something."

"He's not here, it's just us. Who's going to see?"

Wen Xirou pointed to a nearby streetlight. Her voice was calm. "There's a surveillance camera over there."

In the office.

Wan Qian stood next to the desk, feeling very awkward. "Ahem... sorry for the trouble."

The butler bent down and squatted under the desk, inspecting the computer's main unit. The LCD screen on the desk had completely blacked out.

"It seems like the problem is serious. This isn't something that can be fixed here." After a while, the butler's deep voice came from under the desk.

Wan Qian scratched her head, her gaze wandering. "Oh, really? Then... what should we do?"

The farm was already quite poor, and now she had broken the only computer. Even though she was the farm owner, she felt guilty about it.

The butler emerged from under the desk. Despite the large movements, his clothes were without a single crease. The only sign of his efforts were a few black dust marks on his white gloves.

"It'll probably need to be sent to a professional repair shop," the butler said calmly.

"That must cost quite a bit, right?" Wan Qian said, feeling a bit of a sting, as she was really quite poor.

Perhaps sensing her thoughts, the butler paused and answered, "It's still under warranty, so it can be repaired for free."

"Oh, that's good!" Wan Qian immediately felt much better upon hearing the word "free." "Then, please send it off for repairs right away."

"Are you sure you want me to send it for repair now?" The butler remained in place. His usual polite smile had faded, and his dark eyes locked onto Wan Qian, not blinking.
