The front door slammed shut behind us.
Faye didn't say anything as we walked down the driveway. The staff who had led us in avoided eye contact.
Had she been listening?
The air felt heavier now. I had walked in angry, ready to fight. Faye behind me, guilty towards me for lying and towards Leah for betraying her. But now, we were leaving with heart aching for Leah.
Faye didn't cry anymore, but her eyes were hollow. Like something inside her had broken permanently.
I glanced back once, half expecting Leah to appear at the door, maybe with a change of heart. For Faye's sake. But the curtains didn't even move.
She wasn't coming.
Faye suddenly stoped. "Do you think she meant it?" Her voice barely above a whisper.
I looked at her, she was about to cry again.
"All those things she said… do you think she meant them?" She sniffled, wiping the tear that had escaped her eyes.
"No," I said softly, "She's just angry and hurting."
