Chapter 1 - Sunflowers and Lavender

-Woah! Another masterpiece!- laughs happily my little brother, clapping his tiny hands as he looks at the canvas I just finished hanging on the wall. I take a step back and look at the big painting... I found a beautiful spot where two fields meet, one of Lavender and one of sunflowers.

I had to go out each day at one specific time to capture the right light and colours. I wanted the sky to be of a muted light Blue and slightly cloudy so I painted it right before sunset, while I painted the sunflowers and the lavender when the sun was warmer so that the colours came out more vibrant...

The Little daisy growing all alone in between the two fields was a detail I added on my own, it's so small and delicate when compared to those tall and splendid flowers yet it's not any less beautiful... A bouquet is perfect when there are different lengths and colours afterall.

My father walks in the room with some tools in his hands and stops on the door -Isn't that beautiful?! You're a born artist- he smiles.

I look at the canvas once again and feel proud of the result -I feel like this is my best so far! No, actually... I feel like this is really something big! It looks like one of those paintings you see in the halls of big mansions... I'm onto something, I swear!- I laugh while looking back at him -I'm half kidding of course, but I really think that this painting has something special to it-

-If you say so, I don't really understand much about art anyway... But good crops? I know all of that!- he comes closer and clean a stain of paint from my face -Go clean your hands and let's eat now-

...

The next morning I take my basket and head to the town's market, leaving my house I walk a few minutes on a rural street and meet a lot of farmers working in the fields -Going somewhere to paint again?- smiles a man in his forties -Not today! Once autumn comes I want to come and paint your pumpkins tho!-

He laughs at my words -Sure sure, you're welcome anytime young one!-

Walking past the local orphanage all the kids who are out playing run toward me -Ah it's the painter! The painter!- -Do you have something for us?!- -You're going to buy paint?- the surround me while shouting all different questions

-Kind come on, relax haha! Today I don't have anything to show you I'm sorry... But to make up for it I will come next week and teach you how to draw your favorite animal, how's that?-

-Yay!!!!-

...

Reaching the core of the Village I can already smell the delicious scent of fresh bread and vanilla lingering around the streets. Today all the stalls are out and the shops are open for the market, I came here to buy something nice with my savings... I'm not sure if I want to spoil my little brother with pain au Chocolat or get those pig ribs my father has been longing for.

He just got a little bonus at work for his productivity, for being a man of 50 years old he still has a lot of energy and can work at the nearby mill just fine... Meanwhile my little brother got praised by the teacher for finally learning to write! We might not be able to attend big school but at least we can learn the basics thanks to the small Nun's school in town.

Well, I was a bit more lucky since mom used to be my teach before she passed away five year ago... She was very knowledgeable and kind, it was her who gave me this love for painting.

Dad was always bragging about how he pulled such a cultured woman while being "just a big and dumb countryside's boy"

Only I inherited her orange hair and aquamarine eyes and that is probably the reason why my father's face often stiffens when looking at me.

A woman from a nearby tavern districts me as she walk around the outdoor tables with so many glasses piled on her hands, I look in awe at that image and take out a sketch book, drawing some messy lines before she goes back inside.

-Wants some beer, young one?- asks a man at a table, laughing with his friends... He's probably here to enjoy his day off and gamble away with the others untill the sun's down -I'm fine, enjoy your afternoon!- he thanks me with a tilt of the hat as I walk away...

The town's bustling with life today, everyone's happy to finally be able to buy beautiful things at market since we get this occasion only once a month. We do have a local market each week but it's mostly local farmers who seek their products, meanwhile this one is about all the beautiful things they have in the cities! Jewelry, candies, sweets, fashionable clothes and so on.

I would love to buy a lot of things, but sadly I don't own much money and the little I can earn have to be carefully managed, some will go for buying paint and brushes while all the rest goes to help our family... I just happened to earn a couple of extra coins this time.

After walking around and making my purchases I decide to head back home, it's almost lunch time afterall... My little brother should be coming home from school and I need to cook for him, I also need to go back study for my upcoming work interview... I recently saw that a tailor shop in town is looking for an employee. They refused my application at first, but after seeing how much I pestered them, the owner told me that if I could learn the basics on my own within a month he would have took me as his apprentice.

...

After lunch my brother wants to sneak out but I grab him by the shirt -You little scoundrel, think you can run out without helping?- he smiles awkwardly -I was just going... To ehm... Hehe-

I roll my eyes holding back a smile -Help me tidy the table and then you can go play- he quickly rushes to pile the dirty dishes and glasses theh run out of the door as soon as he's done -Ehy! Ah look how fast he can be when he wants to, don't wander off too far!- he turns around and waves an hand -Sure sure!-

After I'm done with the cleaning I take my sketchbook out and go outside, seating down in the sahde of a big tree... Tracing some lines for my next painting, I don't yet know what I want to create... I just draw random objects and let my imagination run free untill the sunset arrives...
