Chapter 2 - Hunger

Despite all the checks he did, everything pointed towards the fact that he had reincarnated.

Grumble

He heard a loud sound as he quickly held his stomach; it felt like this body hadn't eaten for days.

"Your Excellency, Lord Magos is here to see you," he heard a voice call out from outside the massive door.

"I do not think I am in a state to meet anyone at the moment. Also, can I get something to eat… something with high nutrients is recommended," he replied as he wobbled his way back to the bed.

He didn't know why it felt natural to reply to whoever was beyond the door, but he couldn't worry about that now.

It was even weirder that he had requested something with high nutrients… he didn't even know what that meant. Would the person get him yams or what?

"My lord, the Lord Magos insists on seeing you now," the person outside the door called out.

"Did you get me anything to eat?" he shouted.

"The time of Magos shall not be wasted upon your merriment, Governor."

A completely inhuman voice resounded from beyond the door before he watched as the door was slammed open with nearly impossible force. Soon, he saw the inhuman being called the Magos.

Staring at his door, the young man felt a massive chill down his spine as he stared at the grotesque mashup of machine and human hybrid before him.

He didn't know whether to call it a human or a machine. It wasn't a perfect blend… no, it was far from perfect. The being he was looking at stood around eight feet tall—how it even entered the building was a miracle.

"The Cardinal says that Your Excellency has received the grace of the Emperor, and I have come to congratulate you. However, I see you are yet to complete your trials," the transhuman being said as the man covered himself even more.

He didn't know why, but he felt a weird sense of fear while looking at the abhorrent creature… well, its appearance should be more than enough to scare anyone, but somehow, the voice felt familiar.

"Trials?"

"If you will, allow me to perform a physical check-up on you, my lord," the creature said in a tone that definitely suggested ulterior motives.

"Don't trouble yourself, Magos. I believe I can get by on my own, but thank you for your care," the man said in a surprisingly calm tone.

"Your biological stability has been verified. No further optimization is required. The Fabricator-General transmits his greetings." The Magos spoke in its hollow and inhuman voice.

"And I extend my greetings as well," the man said, strangely familiar with such scenarios.

After his words, the creature merely nodded before turning around and walking away. Seeing it, he wondered why the creature still had two legs when it would be more optimal to have caterpillar tracks.

Its steps echoed throughout the hallways as it left. As soon as it crossed the door and turned the corner, the man saw many people entering the room with trays, tables, and such.

The attendants worked like gears in a machine as they arranged a grand feast before him. There were many foods he thought he recognized, but there were even more he had never seen or even thought could be food.

"My lord, your meal is ready as you requested. However, the revered Magos told us to add some nutrient packs, as they may be more beneficial to you," an attendant said.

"You mean the machine thing that just left? When did it have the time to instruct you?" the man wondered before gesturing for the attendant to bring the nutrient pack.

The nutrient pack was in a small container, not much bigger than his palm, but the box it was contained in said that it held 2500 kcal.

"I think I may need more of this," the man said instinctively.

2500 kcal seemed high enough to sustain anyone, but he felt that it wouldn't be enough. He didn't know why he felt this weak and hungry, but he knew for a fact that along with his reincarnation… nothing was normal.

"As you wish, Your Lordship," the attendant said before scrambling to leave.

The door was still on the floor, so they easily left, but the man didn't mind. Rather, he focused on the nutrient pack before him.

Opening the pack, he saw small bars, not much bigger than a standard Snickers, but knowing that they were usually tasteless, he immediately grabbed one of the many vegetables on the table and stuffed it into his mouth along with the entire bar.

Immediately, he felt his body fill with energy, but just as quickly, he felt drained again, almost as though all that nutrition had vanished.

Without hesitation, he began to devour everything on the table, without caring what it was.
