Zari hesitated outside Alpha Lucas's office, her heart hammering. She'd been summoned. That was never a good sign.
Her nerves were wound so tight, she could barely move. Had he called her in to blame her for Ava's recklessness? Honestly, she didn't even know Ava was leaving the fortress until she was already gone. Not that Ava ever listened to her anyway. Stubborn as a rock and twice as likely to cause problems every day.
Taking a deep breath, she stepped in, her head bowed in submission. "You summoned me, Alpha."
Lucas barely looked up at her, but his voice carried the weight of a thousand unspoken commands. "How is Ava?"
Ah. So this wasn't an execution. She resisted the urge to crumple to the ground in relief.
"She's still in shock," Zari admitted. "Hasn't eaten anything."
Lucas sighed and rubbed his face.
"Make sure she eats something."
