Whether Simmons turned out to be such a genius, or the guy just wasn't very understanding, but he was only able to learn how to get into his battle form after a week of long and hard attempts. Every day he spent 8-10 hours on training machines and trying to transform. Thankfully, after learning to transform, he was able to comprehend partial transformation much faster. And after only three days, he could only transform one limb. I realise that I would make a great teacher, and I was originally a blind learner myself, but the fact that he was able to learn it even in such a crude form 12 times faster than me is a little off-putting. It wasn't until the message about the new skill appeared that it calmed my heart a bit.
Master 7ur
A couple of days after Barnell switched to self-training, I received a call from HQ. A new assignment awaited me.
After listening to a rather strange briefing, we were directed to the quinjet. The purpose of our assignment was some files hidden in one of the secret council bases created back in the Cold War. What those files were only Brock and Bobby knew, and we were told to just do it and don't ask too many questions. Although, listening to the briefing, they did come up, and in quite a lot of them. Firstly, why only we were sent on the mission if according to the information we got there is quite a good base with an underground bunker. We, of course, have performed many difficult missions getting out of the water, but the storming of the enemy base with only seven operatives? Not if it's someone of Avengers level, then the mission stops resembling a rather inventive suicide, but looking around I don't see Hulk or at least a couple of Captain Americas among us.
As we approached our destination, I had a strange sense of excitement. I could feel it in my bum that something was gonna happen.
-Okay, guys, let's get ready. We've never taken such big bases before, but we have experience. So we're going to do what we did in Argentina. - Said Ramlowe, pulling out the equipment to breach the defended perimeter. We've recently received some new equipment that's perfect for infiltrating B.A.T.R.5K. A leg exoskeleton system that allows you to silently rise 10 metres into the air and land just as quietly without breaking your legs.
The plan is for Gareth and I to get inside and grab all the bigwigs. Ten minutes after we get inside, Bulldog will detonate the charges in the enemy's ammunition depots and, with a couple more randomly placed TNT packages, sow panic in the enemy camp. Owl would cut their power, and Reaper, Fox and Korshun would clean up the base.
All goals were fulfilled and everything seemed to be perfect, until one of the guards of the head of the base did not notice Panther sneaking and with inhuman speed drove into his side. At that moment, I heard a rather intimidating crunching of my partner's bones. Garett was slammed into the wall. And the guard, having thrown off his jacket, revealed a pretty good exoskeleton wrapped around his entire body.
I, of course, appreciated his menacing smile, but given the screaming of sirens, it was possible not to hide his location. So, while the man was sucking up his advantage, I grabbed my gun from my belt and put a bullet in his forehead. And while his body was falling, I quickly made my way to Bobby. His injuries were extremely serious and there was no time to delay. As I approached my partner, I heard the sound of light footsteps behind me, and on instinct I moved to the side. The fist of the enemy I thought dead flew past me. As I ducked, I was ready to use the flame, thinking it was someone like Logan or Luke Cage, but the reality was much simpler. He just had a steel plate in his forehead and the bullet was bogged down in the defence. Turning towards me, he was about to take another swing when I let out a sigh of relief, then resigning myself to leaving my weapon in the quindget shot my opponent in the eye. Then, to be completely sure of his death I tensed my leg muscles as much as possible and smacked the back of the guard's head several times, fracturing his skull completely.
Quickly running up to the Panther I had no choice but to inject him with one of my regenerators. I decided not to use the strongest one, after all I couldn't answer the question of full recovery in a couple of seconds after the obvious sound of crushing ribs, so I used the long-acting regenerator on Bobby. It was still strong, but it was slow, not if the recipient was in mortal danger, it worked like the others. But if the body doesn't die in the next 10-20 minutes it kind of slows down and gradually heals the patient while even improving the body a bit.
After a couple of minutes Garett opened his eyes and began to rise painfully. After a couple of minutes he was able to move around normally. When I was sure of his condition, we applied a pre-prepared device to open the steel door leading to the office of the head of the base. To my surprise, the man who had the opportunity to escape was sitting calmly at the desk and his look did not show a drop of excitement.
-So even Alexei couldn't make it. - He said sadly, and then abruptly grabbed the gun lying in front of him and put it to his chin and pulled the trigger.
I praised my sixth sense, which allowed me to realise that something was wrong and to prepare for almost any action the man might take. Grabbing one of the knives hanging on Panther's waistcoat I pulled the barrel aside. With the next knife I hit his right arm, not giving him even a chance to attempt suicide again. Getting to the head of the base in a couple of moves I knocked the man out and waited for the guys.
When everything was finished we started to look for the documents we needed, but without the knowledge of this man everything was unsuccessful. So Reaper sent Panther to interrogate him and knock out all the information we needed. Everyone in the squad immediately decided to get away from the room with Bobby and dragged me away with them. They said I'd better not see what Gareth was doing to people.
-Sometimes being a pro at something isn't always a good thing. - Said Jim with a rather odd look.
After only an hour, the Panther came back. He told me about a couple of places where valuable documents were kept, but I was only half-heartedly listening. My gaze was fixed on the man standing next to Bobby. I didn't even recognise him at first, his steely gaze was gone, but the dead eyes of a man as pale as a corpse were staring back at me. I couldn't even see a couple of torture marks on him. In that moment, I had both respect and fear for Gareth's skill at making such a strong-willed man into... this.
Checking my stash and pulling out a stack of documents, I accidentally hit the desk and scattered some of the papers. Picking up the sheets, I noticed a couple of words familiar to me and began to read through the documents.
Now I understand why the secrecy was so important. Cyclops simply didn't want the council to know that he was racing the best team for personal gain. Of course, he could have sent Falcon Eye or the Widow, but the former could not cope with so many opponents, and the latter is not a stupid person and checking the documents would be interested in why Fury this formula.
I've had thoughts for a while now about the rather odd coincidence of Clint and Natasha meeting. I certainly believe in their friendship, but knowing how agents are trained and the fact that Clint is a special agent who has completed a lot of missions to believe that he took pity and somehow sympathised with an enemy agent who betrayed his own? It's a delusion that can only happen to someone who thinks only with what's between his legs, not a long-time specialist.
After checking the Shield's archives and poking around the historical reports in my spare time, I've confirmed that the Fury here was involved in World War II. Which means that taking the eternity serum was part of the story. Except that this stump, left by the Americans from the super-soldier serum, only made a man twice as strong and slowed down aging. But there was one disadvantage of this charm, which seemed to be known only to a small circle of persons. The serum weathered out rather quickly and the receiver had to receive a new portion of eternity every six months to continue to hold back aging. And by the end of the war a new group of scientists was destroyed either by an explosion during an experiment or by enemy sabotage, but in the end it turned out that the second serum created in America was lost to the world... well, or if you look at the director of the Shield, looking only 40-45 years old at the real age of 90-100 years old, it was lost to everyone except Fury.
At least he probably thought so until he got the news from the Soviets. After all, in the basements of the Soviets using parts of the somehow extracted formula of eternity was already created a new serum with identical effects, only without the need to take new doses. Of course, even here not without excesses, the percentage of survivors after taking the drug was only 17%, but our one-eyed man did not stop it, because where is it seen that these bad reds had something that America does not have? So our super spy sent his trusted agent to get the only living object that took the new serum. Oh, and what a performance he put on... a fairy tale. An enemy agent decided to go against orders from his superiors and saved a spy who had lost her purpose in life. And then while she was in an unstable mental state, he carefully began to noodle her about the "good" Shield, which saves the whole world and fights a lot of bad organisations and in general we are all pusi and others are not. And about the fact that all missions are done for the good of America and that they will not fight with the enemies, aimed only at Russia or any other undesirable country for Uncle Sam, he kept silent. Of course, Clint had probably taken a real liking to Natasha afterwards and they'd become partners, but who cared?
From the fact that we were sent here and the knowledge of a whole and quite alive Romanof we can conclude that the carrier of the formula is not suitable for its extraction or copying. That's why the Cyclops needed the much coveted papers, miraculously saved by the collapse of the red room.
For the rest of the mission, I was immersed in my thoughts until Brock's phrase.
-The plans are changing. - Brock said with a grim face, drawing everyone's attention.
-I've just received an emergency transmission from one of the Shield's research bases. We lost contact with it an hour ago, and we'll have to find out what happened there. Danger level five. - Said Rumlow.
-Boss at level five requires two or three squads. - Said Hugh.
-We're the only ones who can get there fast enough, so we'll be in charge of checking the situation inside the labs and the complex first. - Brock replied grimly, realising that the order was rather stupid and too risky. If someone was able to clean the base so that not a single signal leaked out, then send seven or seventy fighters without the support of equipment, they will not win this battle.
Quinjet plunged into a gloomy atmosphere and everyone began to prepare for the upcoming asshole. The oppressive feeling in me became many times stronger.
