Chapter 73 - Chapter 74: A mentors recognition

After orientation, Jillian, Chloe, and Clara stepped out into the university courtyard, where clusters of students engaged in conversation. The air buzzed with excitement and nervous energy.

A group of students approached them, introducing themselves with warm smiles. Some were friendly and eager to exchange numbers, while others subtly assessed them, measuring their competition. Jillian quickly noticed a few students who carried themselves with undeniable confidence, their sharp gazes hinting at a competitive nature.

"So, you're all in the medical field?" one student, a tall girl with glasses, asked. "Better be ready. The professors here don't go easy on anyone."

Chloe smirked. "Good. We like a challenge."

Another student scoffed lightly. "Let's see how long that confidence lasts. The dropout rate in our programs is higher than you think."

Jillian exchanged a glance with Clara. It was clear—this wasn't just a place for learning. It was a battleground where only the strong-willed survived.

The three friends walked away, taking in their new reality. They had made allies, but they had also caught the attention of their competition. University life had officially begun.

The following day marked the true beginning of their academic journey. Jillian, Chloe, and Clara went their separate ways, heading to their respective lecture halls. The air was filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension as students settled into their seats, notebooks and tablets ready.

Jillian's first cardiology lecture was nothing like she had expected. The professor, a renowned surgeon with years of experience, wasted no time diving into complex cardiovascular systems and case studies. Within minutes, Jillian realized how demanding this field would be. The fast-paced explanations, the overwhelming medical terminologies, and the expectation to already grasp intricate details left her feeling slightly breathless.

Chloe, in her neurosurgery class, faced an equally intense session. Her professor, a strict yet passionate specialist, challenged them with critical thinking exercises right from the start. "Neurosurgery is not for the weak-hearted," he warned, scanning the room. "If you think you can memorize your way through this, you're in the wrong place." Chloe clenched her pen, determined to prove herself.

Meanwhile, Clara's orthopedic surgery class was just as grueling. They were immediately introduced to case studies of complex fractures and joint reconstructions. Her professor expected students to engage in discussions as if they were already in a clinical setting. By the end of the session, Clara found herself gripping her notes, knowing that this was just the beginning of a long, challenging road.

At the end of the day, the three reunited at their apartment, exhaustion evident in their eyes. "That was... intense," Jillian admitted, sinking onto the couch.

Chloe let out a dry laugh. "Tell me about it. I feel like I ran a mental marathon."

Clara sighed. "If this is the first day, imagine the rest of the semester."

Despite the overwhelming start, none of them regretted their choices. If anything, the difficulty only fueled their determination. They were here to prove themselves, and nothing—not the pressure, not the competition—would make them quit.

Days turned into weeks as Jillian, Chloe, and Clara immersed themselves in their studies. Their lectures grew more demanding, filled with intense discussions, complex case studies, and long hours in the library. Despite the difficulty, they pushed themselves, determined to excel in their respective fields.

Then came the first Continuous Assessment Test (CAT). The pressure was immense, as the professors had warned them that this test would separate the serious students from the weak ones. Many spent sleepless nights revising, flipping through pages of medical textbooks and watching lectures repeatedly.

On the day of the CAT, the atmosphere in the exam halls was tense. Jillian's hands tightened around her pen as she tackled intricate cardiology questions, her mind racing through everything she had studied. Chloe found herself dissecting complicated neurological scenarios, while Clara carefully analyzed orthopedic cases, ensuring her answers were precise.

When the results were released, the three friends held their breath as they checked their scores. Jillian had passed with flying colors, Chloe had excelled in her field, and Clara had also secured a top position in her class. Relief washed over them as they exchanged smiles, knowing their hard work had paid off.

However, the same could not be said for many of their classmates. Some students had failed miserably, their faces pale with disappointment. Whispers filled the hallways—some were considering changing majors, while others debated whether they had made the wrong career choice.

That evening, Jillian, Chloe, and Clara sat together at their apartment, their expressions a mix of relief and determination. "This was just the beginning," Jillian said, staring at her test paper. "We need to keep working hard."

Chloe nodded. "We made it through the first hurdle, but it only gets harder from here."

Clara stretched her arms and sighed. "Then we better be ready for whatever comes next."

With that, they set their sights on the challenges ahead, fully aware that the road to becoming top surgeons would not be easy—but they were more than ready to face it.

In the Cardiology department, Jillian's dedication and curiosity quickly set her apart from the rest. She was always attentive in class, taking detailed notes, and never hesitated to ask questions whenever she found something unclear. Her determination to fully grasp every concept did not go unnoticed.

Professor Liang, an esteemed cardiologist with years of experience, observed her keen interest and unwavering discipline. Unlike some students who only focused on memorizing facts, Jillian sought to understand the deeper mechanisms behind every condition and treatment. She approached learning with a genuine passion, and her consistency in engaging with the material impressed the professor.

One afternoon, after an intense lecture on cardiac arrhythmias, Jillian stayed behind to clarify a few doubts. As she asked her questions, Professor Liang nodded approvingly. "You have a sharp mind, Jillian," he said. "Most students hesitate to ask, but you take the initiative to seek understanding. That will take you far."

From that day onward, Professor Liang kept a close eye on her progress. He offered guidance when needed, recommended extra readings, and even shared his own experiences in the field. Jillian was grateful for his support, knowing that having a mentor like him could make a significant difference in her journey.

When the Continuous Assessment Test (CAT) results were released, Jillian's hard work was evident—she had scored among the highest in her department. Professor Liang gave her a subtle nod in class, a silent acknowledgment of her efforts.

Though she was pleased with her results, Jillian knew this was just the beginning. The road ahead would be challenging, but with her determination and the professor's support, she was ready to face whatever came next.
