"Come in, my friend," Witte greeted warmly, his expression brightening. "I've heard much of your exploits from the governor of Jinhan."
But no sooner had the door closed than the visitor dropped to his knees with a resounding thud.
"Please spare me, Minister!" he pleaded, his voice breaking. "I beg for your mercy!"
"W-what is this madness? Stand up at once!" Witte reached out to lift the man, but he remained prostrate, his desperation etched in every trembling word.
"I will do anything you ask, Minister. Anything. Just spare me!"
Confusion flickered across Witte's face, but he quickly masked it with concern. "Very well. Come inside, and let's talk. But for heaven's sake, get off the floor."
Finally, the man rose and stepped into the room, his movements hesitant and burdened with shame. Witte poured him a cup of tea, his demeanor softening.
"Now," Witte said, settling into his chair. "Tell me, what troubles you so gravely?"
