"How was school today?" I asked the younger girl.
"Oh, it was so much fun!"
"You say that every time I ask you."
"Because every day is so much fun!"
Same words. Same smile. Same small hands dropping the bag by the door.
She had just come back from cram school. The late evening session. Her uniform was a bit crumpled, one sock lower than the other. Shoes untied. A pencil tucked behind her ear.
She looked tired, but happy.
That was her way.
"Have you eaten anything?"
"No. Is there anything for me to eat?"
"I can heat up the soup. There's rice in the cooker."
"OK! I'll take a shower first."
And just like that, she disappeared into the bathroom. The door clicked shut, and I heard the soft hum of her voice behind it. A tune I didn't know.
My job was simple. Heat the soup. Set the bowls. Make sure the lid on the rice cooker wasn't stuck again.
Every day was more or less the same.
School. Cram school. Home. Shower. Soup. Rice. Study. Sleep. Wake. Repeat.
