The thought had crossed his mind plenty of times.
Sure, they had food, water, and shelter, but survival wasn't the same as escaping. There was no telling when — or if — help would come.
And although it was weird staying on the island, if there weren't any wild animals lurking. It wouldn't be half bad to stay here at all.
So he didn't have a proper answer.
Maya nudged him with her elbow. "Don't get all broody on me now."
Lucas smirked. "Broody?"
"Yeah. You've got that serious face again."
"Maybe I'm just appreciating your taste in shells."
Maya rolled her eyes. "Yeah, sure. Now you care."
Lucas placed the shell back with the others and leaned back on his hands. "Alright, I'll admit it. This is actually kinda cool."
Maya beamed. "See? I knew you'd come around!"
Lucas shook his head but didn't argue.
For a moment, they sat there in comfortable silence, listening to the waves and the distant laughter of their classmates.
