"Yu, I'm afraid I cannot approve your request to leave Hogwarts," Dumbledore said gravely, his piercing gaze fixed on Jane Yu through his half-moon spectacles.
Jane's heart plummeted instantly.
"While our regulations state that young wizards' attendance isn't mandatory, and parents may choose home-schooling or overseas education for their children," Dumbledore continued, "I don't believe the orphanage can provide such arrangements for you."
However, Jane remained determined:
"What if I give up practicing magic entirely?"
Dumbledore's expression grew even graver, every wrinkle on his face tensing. He cautioned:
"You must understand that magic is a gift. The magical power within you won't simply vanish because you choose to ignore it. Without proper guidance, it could become dangerously uncontrollable."
"Surely you've heard of, or perhaps experienced yourself, the magical manifestations during childhood—spontaneous magical outbursts in times of stress, causing objects to levitate or windows to shatter. These occur because young wizards lack control over their magic, which is precisely why systematic training must begin at age eleven."
"The consequences can be dire when Muggle-born wizards don't receive proper education and are left to develop naturally. Their uncontrolled use of magic and their differences from Muggles could endanger both themselves and the wizarding world. The Ministry of Magic cannot allow frequent breaches of the Statute of Secrecy, which is why ensuring proper magical education is paramount."
Jane frowned. After two years of study, she felt confident in her ability to control her magic, having never experienced any loss of control. She felt perfectly healthy and vigorous.
But Dumbledore shook his head firmly.
"No, your case is quite different."
"While magical power typically grows with age until adulthood, the rate of growth varies significantly among young wizards."
"Your magical power has increased at an alarming rate over these two years, and I'm deeply concerned about potential consequences—child, cast an Aguamenti Charm for me, aim it here."
He conjured a large water tank and gestured for Jane to fill it.
"Aguamenti!"
As she cast the spell, a powerful jet of water erupted from her wand. Upon impact with the tank's wall, the force was so great that it shattered the entire container, nearly flooding half the headmaster's office—thankfully, Dumbledore's swift "Finite Incantatem" prevented the disaster.
"You see? This is precisely what I mean," Dumbledore remarked, both impressed and worried. "This is the magical power of a nearly full-grown wizard—no twelve-year-old should possess such reserves. You must learn to control and properly channel your magical power."
Jane immediately understood the reason.
In her first year, Merlin had strengthened her soul;
In her second year, the diary had voluntarily transferred its magic to her;
Powerful soul + Magic x2 = Accelerated magical growth!
She felt deep regret, never having anticipated that what she thought was a advantage for her as a transmigrator would become an obstacle to leaving school!
Meanwhile, Dumbledore continued his explanation:
"For these reasons, I don't believe the orphanage would be a suitable place for you—have you heard of Obscurials?"
Jane nodded, having read about these dark parasitic magical forces in books.
When young wizards are forced to suppress their magic due to physical or psychological abuse, their extreme emotional distress can create an Obscurus.
Dumbledore gave a sad smile:
"My sister—well, never mind that."
"An Obscurus forms under very specific circumstances: trauma related to magic use, self-loathing of one's magical abilities, and conscious attempts to suppress it."
Then Jane heard a revelation about her original self that she never expected.
"Yu, when I first met you at the orphanage, I was deeply concerned about your condition. You were suppressing your powers," he said in a sorrowful tone. "I couldn't understand why this was still happening in 1991—your orphanage director was so extremely resistant to magic that I had to employ certain measures to bring you here."
"Fortunately, you've come to accept it all since entering Hogwarts," Dumbledore continued. "I hope you won't let these efforts go to waste."
Jane was stunned.
Having arrived during the Sorting Ceremony, she knew nothing about what had happened to her original self, only that she too came from an orphanage.
The original Jane's trauma regarding magic use, combined with her current display of wanting to abandon magic and return to the Muggle world...
Dumbledore was worried she might become an Obscurial outside school and wreak havoc!
No wonder he had refused to let her leave since first year, keeping her firmly anchored at school despite her behavior!
"I promise I won't become an Obscurial," Jane said urgently. "I don't have any psychological trauma, I just don't want to stay here anymore!"
Dumbledore looked at this stubborn child, took a deep breath, and suddenly felt weary.
Education truly was the most challenging thing in the world, he thought while stroking his beard.
Neither gentle persuasion nor stern warnings had worked...
In that case, he would have to take more forceful measures.
"I'm sorry, but I cannot approve your withdrawal," Dumbledore delivered his final verdict. "It would require a guardian's signature, and as a minor, you cannot make this decision yourself."
"I can ask the orphanage director—" Jane protested.
"No, I'm afraid you cannot," Dumbledore interrupted. "A month ago, your orphanage closed due to financial difficulties. Your guardianship has automatically transferred, and until you come of age at seventeen, you'll be under the wizarding world's care."
An ominous feeling began to ring alarm bells in Jane's mind.
She sensed something significant was about to happen.
Opening her mouth, she managed to force out the words:
"Then my guardianship, where did it go? I mean, who is my guardian—"
She watched as Dumbledore opened his drawer and took out two copies of a document, placing one in front of her as he said cheerfully:
"With me."
