Kai clenched his fists as he scanned the darkened rooftops. The assassin had disappeared, but their presence left an undeniable truth—he was being hunted.
Lian's voice broke the silence. "We can't stay here. If they attacked once, they'll try again."
Kai exhaled sharply, nodding. "We need information. You said the Monster Core wasn't supposed to be here. Who else knows about it?"
Lian hesitated. "A few high-ranking academy officials… and some people from the outside. The Northern Wastes are off-limits to normal travelers. Whoever smuggled that core in had connections."
Kai's mind raced. Could the attack be connected to the core? Or was this something bigger?
"We should head back," Lian suggested. "We need to be careful from now on."
Kai agreed, but unease settled in his chest. Tonight proved that his growth wouldn't go unnoticed. If he wanted to survive, he needed to be stronger.
They moved cautiously back to the academy. The halls were eerily quiet, most students asleep. But as they passed the main courtyard, Kai felt an odd presence—like someone was watching.
He turned abruptly. A shadow flickered near the academy gates.
Lian followed his gaze. "Did you see something?"
Kai hesitated. "Maybe. Or maybe I'm just being paranoid."
Lian sighed. "Paranoia might keep you alive at this point."
They entered the dormitory area, and Lian stopped at her room. "Get some rest, Kai. We'll figure out our next move tomorrow."
Kai nodded, though he knew sleep wouldn't come easily. As he entered his own room and locked the door, his mind remained focused on one thing.
Whoever was behind this wouldn't stop.
And if they wanted a fight—he'd be ready.
