Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Has the Childhood Friend Figured it Out?

Is having an instant memory a kind of experience?

Thanks for asking, it feels great.

You just glance at an English word and remember it; my mind has never been so clear.

But there's no need to memorize English slang, like 'four generations under one roof': family4.0, hot spring: gulugulu water, concubine number three: three bitches.

Simple, as easy as pie.

Jiang Nian was glad he had the habit of taking all the important books for each subject home during holidays, even though he hadn't flipped a single page, there was still a feeling of secretly having worked hard.

Now it came in handy, delightful, indescribable.

Jiang Nian spent the entire afternoon immersing himself in the ocean of learning. The fragmented knowledge seemed like massive shrimp swallowed by a whale into the sea.

Next door, Qianqian woke up groggily from her nap, biting her silver teeth tightly.

"So noisy!"

No matter how she tried to cover her ears, Jiang Nian's excited sighs and murmurs always managed to reach her ears. Who knows what he's so excited about?

Could it be the legendary, boy's enlightenment?

Qianqian, whose father was an andrologist, wasn't lacking in basic knowledge, just thought Jiang Nian was a bit neurotic. Can't he watch the video without making such loud noises and fiddling with it for so long?

It's broad daylight, and I even have the lights off!

Jiang Nian felt his brain was a bit overloaded after spending the morning studying intensely. It wasn't until the afternoon, when he heard a knock on the door in his daze, that he finally woke up.

"Hello, delivery!"

He remembered taking a call about a delivery that morning and opened the door. The courier lifted his hat, eyed him a bit unexpectedly while pulling a small cart.

"Mr. Jiang?"

"Yes."

After signing, Jiang Nian tried on his shoes. The sneakers had very soft soles, two hundred yuan a pair, a thousand yuan changed shoes for the whole family, it was quite a deal.

Hungry, he didn't have the heart to keep admiring the shoes, so he changed into a pair and went downstairs for a meal.

Previously, if he bought new shoes, he would endure hunger to jump around in them for a minute or two, but now he had a cold two thousand yuan lying in the card.

With a huge sum of two thousand yuan, what's the point of just jumping around?

In the evening, Jiang Nian was still sleepy but had to get ready to go to school for evening self-study.

Maybe because he had delivered breakfast, or for some other reason. Surprisingly, Qianqian hadn't left first for once; instead, she was sitting in his living room waiting for him.

The last time she did this was back in middle school.

Jiang Nian was somewhat flattered by this.

"Why are you waiting for me?"

Hearing this, Qianqian stood up and was about to leave.

"Hmph."

"Hey hey, don't leave, Lady Heroine. Pretend I didn't say anything." Jiang Nian, busy packing his bag, quickly stopped her, "Please sit, please sit, just give me two minutes."

Qianqian looked down at his paw, said nothing, and sat back on the sofa, watching as Jiang Nian tossed his English vocabulary book aside and couldn't help but speak.

"Jiang Nian, what did you tell me this morning?"

"What do you mean?"

"You didn't even bring your vocabulary book! You said this morning you wanted to memorize vocabulary, and in the afternoon you threw the book away?" Qianqian was a bit speechless, giving him a sidelong glance.

"The college entrance exam only looks at your total score, your English is so poor. Even improving by a few dozen points could get you into a pretty good..."

She didn't finish the last sentence, realizing that Jiang Nian's grades were worryingly low. Improving his English by a few dozen points could get him into a decent college.

"Ah, it's a bit long to explain to you." Jiang Nian threw away his language, biology, chemistry, and physics booklets, leaving Qianqian staring with wide eyes.

"Are you crazy, Jiang Nian? I'll tell Aunt Li!"

...

In the September evening, the twilight mixed with the molten gold sunset, the streets were brightly lit.

The self-built houses in the old streets of the small county town stood five or six stories high, crisscrossed by electric wires. The alleys were narrow and dim, but the good part was that buildings didn't block the sunlight.

Qianqian and Jiang Nian walked out from a dim alley, and not far away was Zhennan County High School. Both families lived in an area similar to a shantytown.

The two rarely went together like this, making the atmosphere a bit awkward.

As they approached the school gate, Qianqian, who was half a step behind Jiang Nian, grabbed her backpack strap, hesitated for a while, and said.

"You should mingle less with Zhou Yuting and her group; they're really not good people."

Jiang Nian deeply agreed with this.

After Zhou Yuting's birthday party last time, he saw through that group's true colors. They completely treated him like a clown, trampling on him to flatter Liu Feipeng.

For no significant reason, just because Liu Feipeng wanted to pursue Zhou Yuting. If they couldn't elevate themselves, they would step on others, using comparison to highlight their steadiness.

In their midst, Jiang Nian had no money and poor grades, only his physical appearance, which made him the target of all ridicule.

Qianqian just remembered yesterday's steamed chicken in lotus leaf and breakfast. Although she didn't get along with Jiang Nian, she softened her stance because of shared childhood memories.

Although her "toxic childhood friend" was a bit dense, he had a good heart and great cooking skills. No matter what, it wasn't for others to bully him.

In her view, Zhou Yuting was just a green tea, an outright floozy. Only a guy as straightforward as Jiang Nian could be tricked by Zhou Yuting, getting played around in circles.

She had said similar things before, but they were always squabbled back by Jiang Nian. She was just saying it for the last time today; she wouldn't mention it again.

Unexpectedly, Jiang Nian turned around, hair black as ink with bright eyes, nodded earnestly.

"Hmm, I got it."

Got it?

Qianqian was a bit dazed, when did he straighten up?

She remained in this state of surprise even after she entered the classroom and finished a lesson in evening self-study. The ancestors of the Jiang Family must be smiling from their graves; the bootlicker had a change of heart?

In the brightly lit classroom, there was only the rustling sound of page-turning and writing.

"Qianqian, what's up?" Her deskmate Song Xiyun poked Qianqian's fair arm, cool and soft, "You've been distracted for almost a period, did something happen?"

"Huh?" Qianqian snapped back to reality, "No... it's nothing."

She shook her head, wondering what she was doing, wasting a whole period of evening self-study for Jiang Nian! With a deep breath, she lowered her head to focus on her exercises.

Jiang Nian was in the neighboring class, the two classes were adjacent, but the levels couldn't be more different.

Zhennan County High students were divided into four levels: Key Focus (support class), Parallel Class (ordinary class), Olympic class, and Class Zero, ranked from low to high.

Key Focus classes were all on the first and second floors, close to the ground floor teacher's office, making it easier to manage if there was any disturbance. Olympic and Class Zero were mostly on the third and fourth floors, the pride of the school.

Parallel classes, on the other hand, were stuck on the fifth and sixth floors, a tough spot.

Qianqian was in the Olympic science class, while Jiang Nian was in the parallel science class. By sheer luck, he was on the third floor, very close to Qianqian's class.

The class teacher said they were there to Absorb Spiritual Energy. Jiang Nian didn't quite agree.

For convenience, the teachers for the two classes were almost the same. The same paper was taught first in the Olympic class before being revised for the parallel class. Did they expect them to do well?

Evening self-study was quietly taking place, with Jiang Nian concentrating on his exercises.

The reward from the system was incredibly useful. After a whole afternoon of memory work, he had thoroughly memorized the 3,500 English words needed for the college entrance exam, making the English test papers no longer challenging.
