Chapter 28 - Browser History

Lu Siyan and Su Luqi arrived back at the apartment, the lingering buzz of the city still echoing in their ears. Su Luqi, with a casual flick of her wrist, produced a keycard from her pocket, swiping it across the sensor. The door clicked open with a soft whoosh, revealing the dimly lit interior.

"Home sweet home," Su Luqi announced, tossing her coat onto the nearest chair. Lu Siyan, still slightly flustered from their earlier interactions, followed her inside, locking the door behind him.

They settled at the coffee table, a spread of takeout containers soon filling the space. The aroma of noodles and stir-fry filled the air as they ate in a comfortable, though slightly tense, silence.

Suddenly, the news anchor's voice cut through the quiet. "We're receiving reports of a police investigation underway near the Grand Imperial Mall. Our ground reporter, Sarah Chen, is on the scene."

The camera cut to a live feed of the mall entrance, now cordoned off with police tape. Sarah Chen, her face illuminated by the flashing lights of police vehicles, spoke into the microphone. "As you can see, authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation of the area. Witnesses report a disturbance earlier this evening…"

In the background, a familiar figure appeared: the young master from the mall, now attempting to charm a stunningly beautiful woman. He was leaning close, whispering something in her ear, completely oblivious to the live news coverage.

"And, uh, it seems we have a… distraction," Sarah Chen stammered, her eyes widening. "We'll be sure to update you as more information becomes available."

Su Luqi snorted, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Looks like someone's still trying to… impress."

Lu Siyan, his mouth full of noodles, choked back a laugh. "He doesn't give up, does he?"

Su Luqi, with a flick of the remote, changed the channel. A stern-faced military diplomat appeared on the screen, his voice authoritative.

"In light of recent events," he began, "the government has authorized a full-scale investigation into the incidents surrounding Enrichers CEO, Mr. Ling, and the robbery of the Dikinson transport truck. While certain details remain classified, I can assure the public that we are actively pursuing all leads."

He proceeded to give a carefully worded summary of the events, omitting any mention of the supernatural or anomalous phenomena. He spoke of "unexplained energy surges" and "potential technological malfunctions," carefully avoiding any terms that might raise public alarm.

"We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of our citizens," he concluded, his voice firm. "And we will not rest until we have uncovered the truth."

"Truth," Su Luqi scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Please. They don't know the half of it."

"He's certainly good at… selective reporting," the AI observed. "I wonder how many 'classified details' he's omitting. Probably enough to fill a small library."

After finishing their meal, Lu Siyan, his mind still swirling with the day's events, found himself drawn to his phone. He scrolled through photos of Su Luqi, lingering on a particularly captivating image. He leaned in, attempting a chaste, late-night kiss on the screen.

"Someone's attempting a… digital serenade," the AI quipped. "Perhaps a more… traditional approach would yield better results?"

He put his phone down, a sigh escaping his lips. "Goodnight, Su Luqi," he murmured, his voice barely audible.

Moments later, as Lu Siyan drifted off to sleep on the sofa, Su Luqi emerged from her room, her movements silent and swift. She picked up Lu Siyan's phone, her fingers flying across the screen. A complex string of code appeared, then vanished. "Just a little… insurance," she murmured, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Now, I have complete control."

As she turned to go back to her room, she glanced at Lu Siyan's phone screen, which was still displaying his browser history. A look of mock horror crossed her face. "Oh, sugar daddy," she muttered, her voice laced with playful disdain. "Someone's been… researching… interesting topics."

With a swift, powerful slap, she sent Lu Siyan tumbling off the sofa and onto the floor. "For your… browsing habits," she declared, her voice a low growl. Then, with a sudden burst of speed, she darted back to her room, slamming the door behind her.

Lu Siyan, groaning, sat up, rubbing his sore cheek. "What… what was that for?" he mumbled, his voice thick with sleep.

"Someone's had a… close encounter with karma," the AI observed. "Or perhaps just a… gentle reminder that some things are best kept private?"

He glanced at his phone, noticing a strange app icon he didn't recognize. "Huh," he muttered. "That's weird." He then went back to sleep, completely unaware of the digital intrusion.

Jian's Calculated Moves

Jian sat in his sleek, minimalist office, the holographic displays casting a cool blue light across his face. He reviewed the Apex Innovations stock ticker, a satisfied smirk playing on his lips. The company's value had surged, a testament to his carefully orchestrated plans.

"The Dikinson robbery was a perfect test," he murmured, his voice low and confident. "A controlled experiment in chaos. And they took the bait."

He pulled up a detailed transaction log, focusing on Lu Siyan's name. A subtle, almost imperceptible, flicker of regret crossed his eyes. "Siyan," he whispered, his voice tinged with a hint of melancholy. "He always was… predictable."

His expression hardened as he reviewed the timing of Lu Siyan's stock purchase. "Perfect," he whispered, clicking on Lu Siyan's name, and reviewing the stock prices, "He's playing right into my hands. And he remains blissfully unaware."

He then began to formulate a new plan, a carefully crafted incident designed to distract the PARA team. "Another controlled detonation," he mused, his fingers flying across the holographic keyboard with practiced precision. "A remote region, a similar pattern… they'll be occupied for weeks."

He paused, his gaze momentarily softening. "Just friends," he muttered, as if trying to reassure himself. He remembered the investigation, the way Lin Yue had been getting close. He had seen the name "Su Luqi" on the screen, a name that was becoming increasingly significant. He had deliberately suppressed that information, altering data. He couldn't risk exposing Siyan.

He made a call, his voice calm and authoritative. "Execute the transport disruption, Phase Two. Full network jamming. Emphasize the mechanical enhancements. Maintain a clean extraction."

The scene shifted. In a remote, desolate region, a heavily armored truck carrying political funds sped along a deserted highway. Suddenly, the truck was surrounded by figures wielding mechanical gauntlets and powered exoskeletons. A high-pitched whine filled the air, a network jamming device effectively cutting off all communication. The truck was swiftly overpowered, the money seized, and the figures vanished into the night.

Back in his office, Jian watched the events unfold on a live feed, a satisfied smirk on his face. "They'll be looking for a pattern," he murmured, his eyes gleaming. "But they'll only find a ghost. A ghost I created."

He then began to code, his fingers moving with practiced precision. He was creating a sophisticated algorithm, a program that would manipulate data, create false leads, and conceal his tracks.

He made another call, this time to a high-ranking military official. "I require a month's leave," he stated, his voice firm. "Personal matters."

The official hesitated. "A month? That's highly irregular, Jian. You know we rely on you."

Just then, a news report flashed across a nearby screen. The official's girlfriend, a well-known television personality, appeared, her face contorted in fear. "Please," she pleaded, her voice trembling. "They've taken me…"

The official's eyes widened in panic. "What… what is this?"

"A demonstration," Jian replied, his voice cold. "Of my capabilities. Consider it… leverage."

Outside the official's building, a group of individuals, their movements swift and purposeful, carried a concealed device beneath their coats. They blended seamlessly into the crowd, their presence unnoticed.

Jian returned to his coding, his eyes fixed on the holographic display. He was playing a dangerous game, manipulating events, controlling information, and pulling the strings of power. He was the architect of chaos, the mastermind behind the illusion. He was in control.
