Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Red Harbor

Ethan and Brandon stood inside the dimly lit tavern, the scent of salt and aged rum thick in the air. The walls of the establishment were lined with old nautical maps, rusted cutlasses, and faded portraits of infamous pirates. At the far end, slouched in a chair, was the man they sought—Captain Darius.

The retired pirate had a presence that commanded attention. His silver beard was tangled, and his eyes, though dulled with age, still held the cunning of a seasoned seafarer. A long scar ran down the side of his face, disappearing beneath the folds of his weathered coat. He took a slow sip from his flask before fixing his gaze on Ethan and Brandon.

"So," Darius rasped, "ye be chasin' shadows, eh?" He tapped the ancient, tattered map Ethan had placed on the table between them. "This map leads to the Abyssal Crown… an artifact of unspeakable power, lost to the tides centuries ago."

Brandon leaned in, intrigued. "What is it exactly? And why does every faction seem interested in it?"

Darius let out a dry chuckle. "The Abyssal Crown ain't just some fancy trinket, lad. It belonged to the last Sea King, a ruler who commanded not just the waves, but the abyss itself. Legends say he made a pact with the Deep Ones, creatures older than the gods, in exchange for dominion over the ocean. But power like that don't come without a price."

Ethan crossed his arms. "What happened to him?"

Darius' expression darkened. "He lost control. The abyss whispered to him, turned his mind to madness. His fleet sank beneath the waves, and his kingdom was swallowed by the sea. The few who survived claimed the crown was cursed, that whoever wears it is doomed to share the Sea King's fate."

Brandon shivered. "And where exactly is it now?"

The old pirate leaned forward. "That's the real question, ain't it? The treasure be hidden in the ruins of the Sunken Citadel, an ancient city now resting at the bottom of the Forsaken Trench. But gettin' there won't be easy. The waters are cursed, and creatures of the deep guard the way. Few who venture there ever return."

Ethan exchanged a glance with Brandon before turning back to Darius. "And what's in it for you?"

Darius grinned, revealing gold-capped teeth. "I ain't got much time left in this world, lad. But I've got unfinished business with the sea. Help me get to the Sunken Citadel, and I'll guide ye through the perils ahead. In return, I ask for one thing: let me see the Abyssal Crown one last time."

The room fell silent. Outside, the distant crash of waves against the docks echoed through the night. The weight of the old pirate's words lingered between them.

Ethan considered the offer carefully. The map, the legend, and the stakes—it was all coming together. The Abyssal Crown was no ordinary treasure. It held power that could change everything. But at what cost?

Brandon smirked. "Well, we've come this far. Might as well see it through."

Ethan nodded. "Alright, Darius. We're in."

The pirate's grin widened. "Then ye best prepare, lads. The abyss awaits."

Chapter: Preparations for the Voyage

Ethan stood atop the ridge overlooking the Verdant Mines, his fingers gripping the hilt of his weapon as he reviewed his status window. The notification of his latest achievement still lingered in the corner of his interface, a reminder of the power he had acquired through sheer perseverance. However, strength alone would not be enough for what lay ahead. The Treasure Map he had acquired spoke of an artifact of immense value, hidden beyond the dangerous expanse of the Northern Seas. To reach it, he needed a ship, supplies, and a crew willing to risk their lives for the unknown.

Ethan turned to Brandon, who was skimming through his own interface. "This isn't going to be easy. We need supplies, a ship, and crew members. Without those, we're dead in the water."

Brandon smirked. "We have resources from Verdant Mines. If we play our cards right, we might not need to spend a fortune. We should head to the Red Harbor and see what we can secure."

The Red Harbor was one of the largest trading hubs in the region, home to merchants, mercenaries, and seafarers looking for their next payday. It was also a haven for pirates, bounty hunters, and opportunists willing to slit throats for gold. If they wanted a ship, they'd need to tread carefully.

Red Harbor – Market District

The air was thick with the scent of salt and fish, mingled with the aroma of sizzling meat from various food stalls. Vendors shouted over one another, advertising their goods, while mercenaries eyed each other warily from the shadows.

Ethan approached a merchant selling preserved foodstuffs. "How much for a crate of dried rations?"

The merchant, a burly man with a scar running down his cheek, eyed Ethan before grinning. "Thirty gold pieces per crate."

Ethan smirked. "How about twenty-five gold per crate? I'll take ten upfront."

The merchant hesitated but eventually nodded. "You drive a hard bargain, but fine. That'll be 250 gold."

Ethan confirmed the transaction, and ten crates of rations were added to his inventory.

Brandon nudged Ethan and gestured toward a group of men gathered near the docks. "Sailors. If we need a crew, we should start here."

Ethan thought for a moment before pulling out a contract from his inventory. "Five hundred gold upfront, another five hundred upon completion. Free shares of any treasure we recover."

Tobias grinned. "Now that's an offer I can't refuse. I'm in."

"We still need a ship," Brandon muttered. "And a good one."

Ethan had considered purchasing one, but after browsing the shipwright's inventory, he quickly realized that even the cheapest vessels cost upwards of 10,000 gold.

"We're going to need another way," Ethan said.

Tobias smirked. "There's a ship at Dock 13. A beauty, fast and well-armed. Problem is, it belongs to the Crimson Tide Pirates."

Ethan's lips curled into a smirk. "Then we'll take it from them."
