Many glowing slit and round eyes of various colors flickered open within the darkness, their owners drawn by the scent of unfamiliar travelers.
However, the moment their gaze fell upon the hooded carriage driver with his half-closed eyes radiating an ominous crimson light, an invisible dread gripped them.
Instinctively, the creatures retreated into the safety of their nests and were unwilling to challenge the presence that exuded an aura of death and power.
The beings of the Dark Forest were not as intelligent as the humanoid races of this world but they possessed heightened survival instincts.
They understood one fundamental rule that some entities should never be and were never meant to be provoked.
Inside the carriage, Virelle and Velcy lay curled on a plush bed in the corner and their slow, rhythmic breathing was the only sound that broke the stillness.
