Mary leaned forward, resting her chin on her hands as she regarded Lila with bright, expectant eyes. "So, Lila, what about our daughter attracts you?"
Lila felt her brain momentarily short-circuit as Alice turned to her with a teasing yet eager smile. The weight of expectation pressed down on her, and suddenly, she understood her brother's plight when people questioned him about his wives. Normally, Lila was composed and confident, but this was different—these were Alice's parents, her future in-laws. She couldn't just blurt out any answer. It had to be perfect.
Why did she even like Alice? Well, she knew, of course, but wouldn't anything she said just sound basic?
"Well… Alice is… umm." Lila felt warmth creeping up her neck. She took a steadying breath and decided to just be honest. "It's hard to put into words everything I love about her."
Alice's smile softened, already satisfied with that response. But Mary wasn't letting her off that easily.
