My hands trembled as I pressed my fingers against Charlotte's neck, searching desperately for a pulse.
For a terrifying second, there was nothing—no sign of life, no movement, just the haunting stillness of her body on the kitchen floor.
And then—a faint thump.
I exhaled deeply in relief. "Thank God," I breathed shakily. Her pulse was weak but steady.
I quickly grabbed my phone and dialed emergency services, stumbling over my words as I told them the address and what had happened.
They assured me help was on the way, but every second felt like an eternity.
I looked around to see what had caused the accident.
One of the tall kitchen cabinets had toppled over, its wooden frame shattered, and glasses scattered all over.
It looked like she had fallen against it, and the entire thing had come crashing down on her.
"Hang in there, Charlotte," I said, my voice trembling slightly.
Within minutes, I heard the distant wail of sirens growing closer.
