Chapter 184 - The Shapesifters

The harsh reality of war was laid bare: civilians who remained unarmed were ignored. But the moment anyone picked up a weapon—man, woman, or child—they became a target. The machines were merciless, designed for one purpose: to kill. After eliminating countless Vanguard soldiers, defense forces, and armed survivors, the Fearless Warriors and mechanical legion reached the heart of the residential area.

"Sector 03. Abnormal target detected. Life signal unusually strong. Suspected mutant."

"Sector 11. Abnormal target detected."

"Sector 07…"

As soon as the mechanical dogs entered the residential zone, their scanners began picking up changers—superhuman shifters hiding among the ruins. Before the machines could fire, guttural roars erupted from the shadows.

Roar! Roar! ROAR!

Out of the ruined buildings charged a group of massive beasts: three-to-four-meter-long bears with rippling muscles, giant gray wolves with glowing eyes, and sleek red foxes that moved like blurs of flame. The changers tore through tents and ramshackle homes as they charged, their sheer size and speed leaving destruction in their wake.

A sight like this would've sent human soldiers into disarray, morale plummeting as panic set in. But the mechanical legions weren't human. "Target: Shifters. Execute tactics: crossfire suppression. Ammunition: armor-piercing."

Without hesitation, the machines unleashed their firepower.

Click. Click. Click.

Dozens of heavy machine guns roared in unison, their armor-piercing rounds forming streams of death that crisscrossed the battlefield. The Terror Spiders proved especially devastating. Dual 20mm cannons mounted on their robotic arms unleashed explosive rounds with terrifying precision. Each shot left craters in the ground or shredded the changers in their path.

The charging bears and wolves fell one after another, their bodies riddled with holes. Blood pooled beneath them as their massive frames hit the ground with sickening thuds. But their resilience was remarkable. It took dozens of armor-piercing and high-explosive rounds to bring down a single changer.

"Roar!"

After losing a dozen of their own, the remaining changers closed the distance. A giant bear at the front of the pack rose onto its hind legs, towering over the battlefield. Its roar shook the air as it charged forward, enduring the hail of gunfire. With a mighty swing, it brought its massive paw down toward a mechanical dog. Before the blow could land, a saw chain sword came slashing upward.

Rrrrrrrr!

The high-speed rotating blade tore through the bear's flesh and bone, severing its paw in one clean strike. "Fight!" roared the Fearless Warrior as it stepped forward, its chainsword raised high.

The warrior plunged into the fray, its blade whirring as it cleaved through the oncoming changers. More Fearless Warriors joined the battle, their massive forms crashing into the changers with unrelenting ferocity. Each swing of their chainswords brought blood and carnage, carving a path through the battlefield.

Boom!

With a thunderous crash, a Fearless Warrior at the front of the charge lowered its massive shoulder and slammed into a giant bear. The bear, already missing one paw, was sent sprawling to the ground like a felled tree.

Thud!

The impact shook the earth as the four-meter-tall bear hit the dirt, dazed and unable to recover.

Without hesitation, the Fearless Warrior raised its roaring chainsword and brought it down in a brutal arc.

Roar!

The bear let out a deafening cry of fear as the blade tore into its face, sawing through from its nose to its jaw. The chainsword chewed through the bone, grinding against teeth and cheekbones.

But the Fearless Warrior didn't stop. Pressing down with relentless force, the rotating teeth of the blade carved through the bear's skull like a saw cutting timber.

Click, click, click…

The gruesome sound of bone being sliced filled the air as the warrior's armored boot pinned the bear in place, preventing it from struggling.

Crunch!

With a wet, sickening noise, the bear's head finally split apart, its body convulsing before going still. The Fearless Warrior yanked its chainsword free, blood and brain matter dripping from the blade, and immediately turned to the next target.

All around, the other Fearless Warriors fought in a similarly brutal fashion. These hulking soldiers were built for war, using brute force and crude methods to take down the changers. But the shifters weren't ordinary enemies.

Howl!

A pair of gray wolves, each three meters long, leapt across the rooftops of bullet-ridden buildings. Moving like shadows, one of the wolves lunged at a Fearless Warrior, knocking the armored giant to the ground.

Roar!

The second wolf snarled and pounced, sinking its fangs into the warrior's neck. The thin alloy plating around the neck, designed for mobility, gave way under the wolf's powerful bite, exposing vulnerable flesh beneath. Just as the wolf prepared to tear out the warrior's throat, a deafening blast echoed across the battlefield.

Boom!

A tungsten kinetic energy round, fired at Mach 13, tore through the wolf's skull. Its lifeless body slumped to the ground as blood pooled around it. Not far away, a Terror Spider stood with its shoulder-mounted electromagnetic railgun humming faintly, small arcs of electricity crackling around the barrel. Even these killing machines had been outfitted with railguns, ensuring no enemy was beyond their reach.

The remaining wolf, furious at its companion's death, turned its attention back to the fallen Fearless Warrior. With a growl, it lunged, jaws snapping. But the warrior, chainsword still in hand, swung upward in a wide arc.

Rrrrrr!

The blade sliced cleanly through the wolf's midsection, severing its body in two. The animal let out a strangled yelp before collapsing, its blood spraying onto the rubble-strewn ground. The Fearless Warrior rose to its feet, gore dripping from its weapon. Without pausing, it swung the blade again, splitting the wolf's head open with a single strike. Flesh, bone, and brain matter splattered in all directions.

In terms of sheer strength, the Fearless Warriors and the changers were evenly matched. A Dreadnought could overpower a giant bear in brute force but lacked the speed of a gray wolf. However, their power armor and chainswords gave them an undeniable advantage. In one-on-one combat, the warriors could easily dominate the changers. Only when outnumbered two-to-one or more did they face real challenges. For the changers, the bears' reliance on brute strength made them vulnerable. Despite their size, they couldn't match the sheer destructive capability of the Dreadnoughts' weapons and armor. The chainswords, with their unrelenting rotation and razor-sharp teeth, turned every encounter into a bloody spectacle.

Click, click, click…

The sound of chainswords grinding through flesh and bone filled the battlefield. One by one, the giant bears fell, their limbs and heads severed. Blood-soaked fur and mangled bodies littered the ground as the Fearless Warriors pressed forward.

The wolves and rare red foxes fared slightly better due to their speed, relying on quick movements and group tactics to overwhelm the warriors. But their efforts were short-lived. "Target: shifter. Priority engagement." The Terror Spiders adjusted their aim, focusing on the faster changers.

Click, click, click…

The heavy machine guns roared again, their armor-piercing rounds shredding through makeshift walls and rubble. The foxes, darting between buildings like crimson ghosts, found their space shrinking rapidly.

When pinned down, they became easy targets for the electromagnetic railguns.
