In the station, Fence paced in front of her desk. The feeling of being watched had not gone away. She had to trust her instincts, but they were telling her something that she wasn't ready to hear.
Eskar San walked in, holding a file. "Fence, you are not going to like this."
"Try me," she replied.
San opened the file and inside was a photograph of the victim--his face is clear now that the body had been processed and cleaned up. "This is Luke Davis," San said. "He was been missing for two weeks. His parents reported him as a runaway, but it looks like he wasn't running from anyone. He was running to something."
Fence leaned forward. "What do you mean?"
"His last known address was a small apartment in the city. His landlord said he was constantly getting strange phone calls and there were rumors of him getting involved with some dangerous people.
"Dangerous people?" Fence repeated. She felt the pieces starting to fit, but the image still wasn't complete. "Who?"
San shrugged. "We don't know yet, but there is something else. Luke Davis had the same tattoo---the arrow. And there is a connection to your brother."
Fence's blood ran cold. "What connection?"
San hesitated. "Luke was involved in an underground network, one that goes back years. Your brother was part of it, Fence. You don't remember, but it's all connected."
Fence felt as through the floor had been ripped from beneath her. Sam... involved in something like this? What had he gotten himself into? And how did it tie back to Luke Davis's murder?
As the answers began to unfold, one thing was clear. Fence was no longer just a detective on a case. She was now a part of it--whether she liked it or not. And the deeper she dug, the more she realized that the person responsible for Luke's death was someone she couldn't outrun.
The highway had always been a place of secrets and now, it was leading her straight into the shadows of her own past.
