I tightened my eyes even more as I felt a warm ray of light flooding into the room, remaining motionless on the soft bed, as I sensed footsteps coming my way, but stopped halfway as the doors swung open, leading a young boy who came running in. He immediately jumped on the soft, silky bed I was in, not being able to knock the pain out I released a tiny 'Ouch' which I soon regretted the second I felt the tickling fingers all around me from the lady who made the footsteps and the young boy who came in like a kangaroo.
After a few seconds, they stopped and I finally got a gasp of air and my mum, the footsteps lady, gave me a lovely smile and said.
"Breakfast is ready, and hurry up, you can't be late."
"I know I can't be late, and I woke up a few minutes ago."
"Then why didn't you get up?"
"I felt tired."
"Well, get up; you can't be late," she said as she pushed me off the bed and left the room.
I struggled to get to my feet from the ground and make my bed as neatly as possible, knowing it'll be the Christmas holiday before I lie on it. Then I remembered there had been two people who came into my room, my brother Jay, who was the kangaroo and my mum. But only my mum left the room because I didn't see my brother leave. I immediately knew what game he was trying to play and called out.
"Jay, please come out. I don't have time for hide and seek, I can't be late!"
All I heard was nothing. I signed as I said the next few words.
"I'll give you $5 if you come out," but I was faced with silence. So I tried again.
"I'll give you double the price if you come out", and still nothing but silence. I hated to do this because I had already cleared up my room the day before, and it was practically perfect. Unfortunately for me, I had to rig it up in order to find Jay. I already started looking under the bed when I heard a tiny voice.
"I give up," Jay said, coming out of the wardrobe with his hands in the air. "I'd rather take ten bucks than risk being caught and getting nothing!" he said with a 'I need the money' tone.'
"Ok, now go out, I'll give you the money when I come down for breakfast. I need to get ready." I said as I shoved him out of my room, at least I didn't have to mess up my room.
I went straight to the window, as I opened it-using the curtains, after all, there's nothing like that fresh morning air.
*
I was halfway through the stairs with one huge luggage in each hand, an underseat bag on my head, my backpack on my back and my phone in my mouth when Jay came sprinting in the opposite direction making me drop everything I was holding and roll down the stairs with the suitcases landing on top of me. Worst of all, he stood there laughing before he offered me a helping hand. I took it and was almost on my feet when he left me to fall again. "Oh, you will get it!" I said as I stood up and started chasing him around the house. I didn't stop until my mum called us down; she had already cleared up everything, and it was by the door.
"I'm going to miss you so much", she said as she kissed my cheek, then turned to my brother and said:
"Can you stop causing trouble for once in your lifetime?!" he just giggled and went to the dining room."I'm worried about him sometimes, but I worry more about you. Please, as much as you can, stay out of trouble, please?"
"I would try my best to stay out of trouble."
"I need you to promise me that."
I can't believe my mum is making me promise this. I can't stay out of trouble because I can't help it. Every time I try, I always end up being drawn to trouble as if being called for a mission of jeopardy.
"Promise me, please..." She said again. I pondered my answer... Yes, a trick. I'm sure it would work.
Putting my hands behind my back and crossing the index finger and the ring finger, I said:
"I promise Mum, I'll stay out of trouble." She looked at me like I was missing something in life.
"Seashell, you do realise that I can see your crossed fingers. Don't you?" Oh no, it didn't work. I had to promise her now. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
"Fine, Mum, I promise."
"Uncross your legs."
"... I promise"
"Your hands."
"...ise"
"Your toes."
"Fine," I said, stretching out my limbs in favour of my mum's sight, "I promise to stay out of trouble."
"Seashell, if you were going to a regular school, I would have let you go without making a promise, but you are not. Could you stop trying to cross your tongue, it's not even two." Uh, deflated, I gave up trying not to promise. The twisting of the tongue was weird anyways.
"Fine. I promise."
"Good, good, good. Thank you for being mature sea shell." Are you kidding me right now? How does she know I wasn't faking that one? "'Cause I'm your mother." She just answered an unspoken question. Can she read minds, too?
She just smiled."Come on, you know Jay, he'll probably finish all the pancakes before we get there."
A loud sound came from the dining room, and a lot of scurrying, before a high-pitched voice filled the whole house.
"Already on it." That was Jay.
"Hope you're not on my pancakes," I said in a tone that meant if-you-are-you-are-dead.
"What do you mean? I'm on the last piece."
"OH YOU!" I bolted to the dining room only to see Jay putting more whipped cream, honey-even sprinkles! On a pancake.
My heart instantly softened. Jay, the trouble-making Jay, was putting sweet ingredients on my pancakes. I never thought I'd love this boy. But now I do, because he cares about his sister, he finally cares about me!
Jay popped the pancake in his mouth. Then looked at me and licked his lips.
Never mind, I take back what I said.
"Where is mine?" I asked because there were no other pancakes.
"Pwatrfeha", a muffled sound came out of Jay's lips, which I assume to be a laugh. "It's gone."
I instantly whirled to Mum." Please tell me his lying." She looked stunned.
"He ate it all." She said.
I looked at him furiously, but then I walked to the parrot's cage and stroked its feathers, instantly shooting me.
I walked back to the centre of the kitchen and got milk from the black fridge, and then walked to the raven coloured cupboard stained with white streaks and opened it to get the Frosted Flakes out.
"Hahaha, eating cereal on her first day of school." My last thread. I pounced on him and he just lay there laughing his head off.
I raised my fist, about to give him a taste of the medicine he gave me, when my force was intercepted. I looked up to see Scarlett.
