At noon, Helena Mina got out of the car holding a shopping bag.
"Grandma! Do you need help?" the little girl called out, running along the path beside the lawn.
"If you can handle it," Helena Mina said with a laugh.
The little girl, about five years old and wearing a floral dress, took the heavy shopping bag from Helena Mina's hand. The bag was taller than her, and an apple slipped out, rolling down the sloping path toward the street corner.
"Oh no!" the girl screamed.
"You'll have one less apple to eat tonight," Helena Mina laughed.
At that moment, the apple rolled toward a pair of slightly icy white sneakers. A black hand picked it up.
Wei Tianyang, wearing a white shirt and blue jeans, stood there holding the red apple.
Helena Mina paused for a few seconds and then quickly said, "Nina, go inside and to your room."
"But don't you need help?" Nina asked.
"Go inside now!" Helena Mina urged.
