Li Shen stood at the Viper Manor gates as servants loaded the last supplies onto their horses. The morning sun cast long shadows across the courtyard, painting the stone walls in shades of amber and gold.
Lan Zhi approached him, her usual stern demeanor softened by a hint of vulnerability. "My king, before you depart..."
"What troubles you, Lan Zhi?" Li Shen turned to face her.
"The manor's finances require my constant attention." She smoothed her robes, a nervous gesture unlike her typical composure. "But if only a few hours or even a day, my subordinates are capable enough to manage. Perhaps when you return..."
"Speak freely."
"There's a secluded hot spring in the eastern mountains." Her cheeks flushed slightly. "The waters are said to have healing properties. I'd like to show you, just the two of us."
Li Shen caught the meaning behind her words. Despite her controlled exterior, Lan Zhi yearned for moments away from her duties. "When I return, we'll take a day for ourselves."
