"Solrock, use Sandstorm!"

"Lunatone, use Moonblast!"

As soon as the battle began, Chris and his opponents, Tate and Liza, shouted their commands loudly, taking the lead.

Chris immediately sensed the intensity of the battle ahead. Although Solrock and Lunatone were at level 68—an impressive eight levels higher than his Tyranitar and Greninja, who were at level 60—the strategic advantage was still within his grasp. Before this match, Chris had focused extensively on training Venusaur, with Greninja receiving significant attention as a secondary focus.

Wasting no time, Chris countered with swift orders.

"Greninja, use Surf!"

"Tyranitar, unleash Hyper Beam!"

Solrock ascended into the sky, spinning rapidly as it rose. A swirling yellow sandstorm emanated from its body, gradually intensifying into a tempest. Tate's strategy was clear: if Chris wouldn't allow Tyranitar to create a Sandstorm, they would do it themselves. However, just as the sandstorm began to form, it suddenly dissipated. The swirling sand collapsed as though following a command to retreat.

"Sandstorm… ineffective?" Tate muttered in disbelief.

"Tyranitar is controlling the battlefield's weather," Liza deduced quickly. "It forcibly interrupted your Sandstorm!"

Chris folded his arms and smirked.

"How many times have I told you? Don't try to manipulate the weather in front of my Tyranitar. Even his preferred Sandstorm won't appear without his permission!"

With Solrock's first attempt to seize control neutralized, Lunatone charged forward to recover the momentum. Its crescent-shaped body emitted a soft, luminous light as it summoned countless pink energy beams, converging mid-air into a dazzling Moonblast aimed directly at Tyranitar. The move had a type advantage, delivering double damage against Dark-types like Tyranitar.

Yet before the Moonblast could strike, an immense azure wave rose up from the ground, intercepting it. Greninja's Surf stood tall between the attack and its target. The towering wave, like a primordial sea monster, opened its maw and swallowed the Moonblast completely. But it wasn't finished. The wave surged forward, threatening to engulf both Solrock and Lunatone.

Lunatone's lower Special Attack stat left it vulnerable, and Greninja's overwhelming force widened the gap. With an eight-level difference, Greninja delivered a crushing blow.

"Solrock, use Light Screen!" Tate called out urgently.

Radiant sunlight burst forth from Solrock's body, forming a lavender-hued barrier of Psychic energy in front of both Pokémon. The Light Screen dampened Surf's momentum, partially neutralizing its power. Tate and Liza sighed in relief; both Solrock and Lunatone's Rock-typing made them highly susceptible to Water-type moves. Without the Light Screen, Solrock, with its lackluster Special Defense, would likely have been defeated instantly.

Chris couldn't help but chuckle as he saw Tate and Liza breathe a sigh of relief.

"Is it too early for you to relax?" he thought.

Greninja's Surf might have been stopped, but what about Tyranitar's attack?

In an instant, a brilliant white beam of destructive energy cut through the battlefield. Tyranitar's Hyper Beam pierced the waves, shattered the Light Screen, and surged forward, unstoppable.

Lunatone was the first to be struck. Naturally, with its access to the Fairy-type move Moonblast, it was Tyranitar's primary target.

"Boom! Boom! Boom!" The impact slammed Lunatone into the gymnasium's reinforced wall. Though the material held firm, the repeated thudding echoed as Lunatone's body was forced deeper into the wall with each blow.

When Tyranitar finally closed its mouth, the Hyper Beam dissipated, leaving a scorched and smoking Lunatone embedded in the wall. Its body was charred, its eyes swirling in a daze.

"Lunatone is unable to battle!" declared the referee.

Despite the announcement, Chris remained focused. There was still one Pokémon left—Solrock. Or was there?

The Light Screen protecting Solrock, already weakened by Greninja's Surf, suddenly shattered. A sharp projectile—a shuriken made of pure water—pierced through it. Before Solrock could react, Greninja appeared directly in front of it, wielding a sleek black blade formed from Dark-type energy.

"Night Slash!"

Greninja's blade gleamed in the light as it carved through the air, leaving a trail of dark energy behind. The attack was swift and precise, like a streaking meteor.

Greninja landed gracefully, turning its back to Solrock and sheathing its blade with a flourish. A moment later, a deep slash appeared across Solrock's body, nearly splitting it in two.

With a resounding "crack," Solrock collapsed to the ground, completely defeated.

"Solrock is unable to battle! Mossdeep Gym Leaders Tate and Liza have no remaining Pokémon. The winner is Chris!" the referee announced.

The screen of Chris's handheld displayed the post-battle results as he returned to reality.

[Defeated Solrock LV68, Greninja gained 6975 experience.][Defeated Lunatone LV68, Tyranitar gained 6975 experience.][Defeated Mossdeep Gym Leaders Tate and Liza. You received 50,000 Pokédollars as a reward.]

The game's dialogue continued:

Liza:"Can't our combined minds and hearts defeat you?"

Tate :"What a formidable opponent!"

Liza:"This is the Mind Badge, proof of defeating the Mossdeep Gym. With this badge, the move Dive becomes a Hidden Machine (HM)."

Tate :"This is the Technical Machine (TM) for Calm Mind, a skill we developed while training Psychic Pokémon. It also includes insights from our experience as breeders of Psychic Pokémon. Use it wisely!"

Liza:"Oh, and here's our Psychic training method. If you possess Psychic abilities, you might find it useful for practice!"

Tate and Liza:"We look forward to battling you again in the Pokémon Championship!"
