Chapter 14 - bodyguard

Peter sat in his luxurious office, trying to adjust to this new reality that was slowly becoming a part of him.

Although some time had passed since he arrived in this world, organizing the memories of his alternate self was no easy task.

It felt like his mind was constantly battling between what he knew from his original life and what this reality imposed on him.

He looked around his office, trying to feel like it truly belonged to him. The smart glass desk, the walls equipped with screens displaying real-time market and tech updates, and even his high-end leather chair—all of it screamed success. But he couldn't shake the feeling that this success wasn't entirely his.

He had inherited this company—or rather, his counterpart in this world had built it. The information about his life here was clear in his mind, but he didn't feel like he had truly lived it. It was like being an actor handed a script about a life he never experienced, yet he had to play the role flawlessly.

Peter sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Man, this is never gonna feel normal..."

Karen's voice rang in his head "Theresa Riley has arrived. Would you like me to let her in?"

Peter lifted his head, refocusing.

Theresa Riley. The daughter of May Riley in this world.

Someone he had no connection to in his original reality, and yet… he couldn't ignore the strange feeling he had when he first saw her file.

"Yes, let her in."

The door opened, and Theresa stepped inside. From the way she carried herself, it was obvious she was a professional—straight posture, steady footsteps, and eyes scanning her surroundings like she was on a mission rather than just attending a meeting with her CEO.

"Good morning, Mr. Parker," she greeted him formally, standing in front of his desk with disciplined composure.

Peter gave her a small smile and gestured for her to sit. "Good morning, Theresa. Thanks for coming."

She sat down without losing her composure, placing her hands neatly on the table.

"I heard you've been working with us for some time, but I never got the chance to meet you personally. You have an impressive record," Peter said, watching her reaction.

Theresa gave a slight nod. "Yes, I was in the NYPD, narcotics division. But I resigned after a tragic incident. After that, I decided to move into the private sector, and I ended up here."

Peter observed her with interest, realizing just how tough her experience in law enforcement must have been. He didn't know all the details, but he could see it in her eyes—the look of someone who had seen things she could never forget.

He was silent for a moment before speaking in a calm tone. "I know this might come as a bit of a surprise, but I've been considering promoting you to a new position."

She raised an eyebrow slightly, seemingly caught off guard. "A promotion, sir?"

"Yes," Peter said, leaning back in his chair. "I want you to be my personal bodyguard."

She studied him carefully, as if trying to analyze his motives. "A bodyguard? With all due respect, sir, but why me specifically?"

Peter wasn't ready to give her the full truth. He couldn't just say, Because in another world, you might have been part of my family.

Instead, he simply offered a small smile and said, "Because I need someone I can trust. You have the skills and experience for the job. Plus, you've already proven your capability in managing security here."

Theresa remained silent for a moment, as if weighing her options, then slowly nodded. "If that's your decision, I'll do my best."

Peter smiled, feeling a sense of relief. She might not be his family in the traditional sense, but he had decided to get closer to her. After all, no matter which reality he was in, she was still Theresa Riley. And for him, that was enough.
