Chapter 258 - Interlude: James Potter

In James's honest opinion, Sirius was arguably the best and worst friend for anyone to have.

He was reckless brave enough to do anything that came up like visiting a Basilisk's home. He was insane calm enough to do what most wouldn't even consider, like challenging Dumbledore to a freakin' duel. He was rude blunt enough to speak his mind without a care.

All in all, he was a Gryffindor Godrick would've been proud of.

A Ravenclaw Rowena would've balked at.

A Slytherin that would've pulled a coup against Salazar.

And if anyone called him a Hufflepuff, Helga would've sent them to St Mungos.

As a roommate on the other hand... He was once again the best and worst one anyone could have.

He'd woken up a little earlier than planned for a weekend which was mostly due to the chattering Black on the bed over, ignorantly talking to himself as he dotted down what he figured were more insane ramblings and plans.

He would've been upset at having been woken up so early, if not for the fact the... Well, insane one-sided conversation was so interesting.

He was personally taking it in stride.

"Slowly change the world from the inside? Nah... Not really keen on dealing with outdated paperwork..."

...He hoped it was all hypothetical. Sirius had a habit of talking about 'theories' and whatnot. The others called him a conspiracy nutjob behind his back and a genius to his face for it.

Personally, he figured it was both- At least until he proved his theories right. Which he tended to.

You don't get Dumbledore fired from one of his jobs without having somewhat of an idea of what you're doing.

"Go gungho on the world?"

Gungho? The strange word filtered through his bemused mind as he secretly frowned under the cover, wondering what it meant.

"Force it to change from the outside?"

...Was Sirius considering Dark Lordism??

Was that why he was so fixated on this 'Voldemort'??

"Nah... Just means dealing with my own paperwork... Which is arguably worse..."

He breathed out a sigh of relief at that one.

"All conquest roads inevitably lead to paperwork..." The sound of the book closing caused him to blink.

...For someone that thrived off beating people with word games more than magic- A blessing in disguise really- He seemed to really hate paperwork...

It was kind of amusing reall-

"Been there, done that, wiped a universal race for it."

What.

"Oi. You going to keep on snooping on me like a house elf, or are you going to get out of the cover?"

...He really hoped Sirius was talking to someone el-

Something slammed into his bed, shaking it the slightest bit.

With a sheepish look on his face, he idly rose up and pulled the cover away from him.

"...So." He locked eyes with the amused Black. "Uh, wake up early today?"

The boy gave him a deadpan look.

He scratched at the back of his own head.

"...What are you up to?" He continued at the silence. The question earned a pair of rolled eyes from the other as he watched him simply lean back into his bed rest.

"Oh you know, deciding whether I should take over the world, set the course for Harry Potter-"

He blinked at the second bit. "Uh, what?" A single beat passed. "Who's Harry Potter?"

The boy snorted at him.

"Main character."

He mulled the answer over in his head as it tilted the slightest bit.

"Are you writing a book or something?"

The sheer amusement pouring out of the other boy told him he was missing something.

"You mean this?" Sirius questioned, picking up the book he'd been writing on.

He eyed the book, in particular, knowing it was the same one the boy had been doodling on earlier...

Maybe his ramblings had been story ideas or something? Which... Well, on one hand, he'd be somewhat annoyed about it given he hadn't been asked for permission to use his own family name, not that he'd be against it. And on the other meant there was a slightly small chance Sirius wasn't actually bothered about the paperwork he'd have to deal with... For conquering the world...

"Oh don't get so worked up." The boy snorted, shaking his head. "Don't worry, it's not another Harry Potter story."

"Another!?" He immediately remarked alarmed. "How many are there??"

Sirius, for some reason, found that hilarious.

"What's so funny?" He questioned somewhat glum.

"How freakin' meta this conversation is."

He had no idea what that meant.

"Sirius." He took in a deep breath, his gaze locked onto to the other boy. "Are you planning to take over the world?"

"No."

He believed him, and gave a nod for it, because the alternative just wasn't fun to think about.

"Are you planning to write a story about my family or something?"

"Maybe."

"...Am I the main character?"

"Depends."

"On?" He questioned seriously. The idea wasn't exactly a bad one to consider as long as he had a hand in it-

"How much do you love your parents?"

He blinked in bemusement.

"'Cos main characters that sell generally don't have any."

"...Sirius, are you planning to kill my parents off??"

"In real life or in the story?"

He stared at him, not willing to answer the stupid question.

"...Guess you don't wanna be the main character."

He opened his mouth to respond.

"Don't name your kid Harry." The boy added on with a wave of his hand.

He was starting to have second thoughts about... Well, everything.

"I wasn't planning to..." He remarked warily. "If I did, does that mean you'd have to-"

"I mean if Voldemort doesn't,"

...How the hell did they get to thisconversation??

"Sirius, what do you have against Harry as a name exactly?"

Sirius stared at him for a rather unnerving minute, before he let out a sigh and simply laid his head back on the pillow.

"It's not Harry I have a problem with, it's all those abysmal nicknames."

...He was officially lost. Scratch that. He wasn't sure which planet he was on right now.

"We're talking in theory right now right?" He simply questioned, a tad unnerved. "Like, a... Very weird kinda joke right?"

"It's not a Cursed Child, so no."

"Are... Are you talking about Remus again? because you really have got to stop-" He shook his head, his mind somewhat irritated at the sudden change in subject. "I am serious!" A single beat passed. "Sirius." The words, unsurprisingly, earned another chuckle from the other.

"I am obviously joking idiot." The boy rolled his eyes. "It's not like there's a prophecy in the future that basically condemns you to die!"

His eyes widened.

"IS THERE!??"

"No, you bloody idiot." The boy remarked, chuckling out loud. "What the hell do you think I've been trying to stop here?"

HE WAS SO CONFUSED!

Sirius thankfully seemed to notice his current state of mind. "What's wrong now?"

"You!" He immediately answered. "Everything about this conversation!" His hands swept up in frustration. "You! Been you is the problem!"

"For the timeline?" The boy questioned before humming. "You're not wrong."

He blinked once, stared at the confusing boy for a few moments, his mind unable to process what the hell he was talking about before he simply sighed, got up, and went to the bathroom.

It was only until he got back to the shared room that he noticed the piece of paper stuck to the back of the boy's head, which meant all the things he'd said out loud at the start had been intended for him to hear... Which also meant Sirius was absolutely aware he was constantly waking him up early in the morning and was doing it on purpose.

...He really was the best and worst friend to have.
