Chapter 78 - Chapter 78: Reminder of a Childhood Crush

Kite

Kite panted as he pushed himself harder, his legs pumping as he sprinted along the mountain trail. The crisp air filled his lungs, invigorating him as he relished the feeling of freedom that came with running. Today was meant to be a day of rest for the group, but he had decided to take advantage of the peaceful surroundings to focus on his own training.

Suddenly, a blur of movement caught his eye. Liliana dashed past him, her laughter echoing through the trees. "Hurry up, slow poke!" she called over her shoulder, her blond ponytail bouncing with each stride.

Kite let out a chuckle, his competitive spirit igniting. "I'm not slow!" he shouted back, determination flooding his veins. He pushed himself harder, narrowing the gap between them. Liliana was fast, but he was determined to catch up.

As he rounded a bend in the trail, he could see her up ahead, her silhouette framed by the sunlight filtering through the trees. She turned back to look at him, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "You better not let me win, Kite!"

With a burst of energy, Kite accelerated, his focus sharpening. He could hear the sounds of nature around him—the chirping of birds, the rustle of leaves in the breeze—but all that mattered was the chase. The thrill of pushing his body, of competing with Liliana, drove him forward.

He could feel his heart racing, not just from the exertion but from the joy of the moment. The camaraderie they shared on their journey brought a lightness to his heart, a reminder that they were all in this together.

As he closed the distance, he reached out, trying to tag her shoulder. Liliana squealed in delight, evading him with a quick sidestep. "Too slow!" she teased, her laughter ringing through the air.

Kite grinned, feeling a surge of determination. He picked up the pace, weaving through the trees, his mind focused. With one last burst of speed, he lunged forward, finally managing to catch her arm.

"Got you!" he declared triumphantly, breathing heavily as he slowed to a stop beside her.

Liliana spun around, her face flushed with exhilaration. "Okay, okay, you win this time! But I won't go easy on you next time!"

Kite smiled, panting lightly. "I wouldn't expect anything less."

They stood together for a moment, catching their breath, the mountain scenery sprawling beautifully around them. The sun shone brightly, and the air was crisp and fresh. It was moments like these that made all the hardships of their journey worthwhile.

"Do you think the others will be annoyed we trained without them?" Liliana asked, glancing back down the trail towards where the campsite lay.

Kite shook his head, still grinning. "Probably. But I think they'll understand. They'll probably join us later."

Liliana laughed and put head on his shoulder. Kite felt his face heat up a little. While he felt funny around Cassia, Sylvana, and even Elian, there was something a bit different about Liliana. Maybe it was because she looked and acted like his crush in his past life.

It was a simple gesture, yet it held a weight that made his heart race. Her playful spirit and infectious laughter always managed to lighten his mood, but there was something about this moment that felt different—more intimate.

After a brief silence, Liliana lifted her head and turned her gaze to the sky. "Look at those birds!" she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement. She pointed toward a cluster of vibrant bluebirds flitting between the branches. "Aren't they beautiful?"

Kite followed her finger, admiring the delicate creatures as they danced through the air. "They are," he agreed, a smile creeping onto his face. "I bet Sylvana would love to see them. She's always so fascinated by nature."

Liliana giggled, her enthusiasm infectious. "Oh, definitely! Just imagine her reaction. She'd probably try to sketch them right then and there."

Kite laughed, picturing Sylvana crouched down, her brow furrowed in concentration as she tried to capture the essence of the birds on paper. "Yeah, and she would definitely give us a lecture on their migration patterns while she's at it."

Liliana joined in his laughter, and the sound echoed through the trees. "And then she'd tell us to be quiet so she can focus!"

Kite nodded, still chuckling. "Exactly! It's part of her charm."

They stood there together, watching the birds flit from branch to branch, the laughter fading into a comfortable silence. Kite felt a warmth blooming in his chest, a mixture of appreciation for the moment and the company beside him. Liliana had a way of turning even the simplest of things into something magical.

"Do you ever think about what it'll be like when we finally reach Auroria?" Liliana asked, breaking the silence. Her gaze remained fixed on the birds, but her tone was thoughtful.

Kite turned to her, his expression becoming serious. "All the time. I mean, it's hard not to. There's so much we need to learn—the prophecy, the history of Arosia. It could change everything for us."

Liliana nodded slowly, her eyes reflecting the sunlight as she watched the birds. "Yeah. But I also hope we can take some time to enjoy it when we get there. I want to see the sights, try the food, and maybe even meet some interesting people."

"Definitely," Kite replied, his mind racing with images of bustling markets and grand libraries. "And I want to show you all the places I've read about. The gardens, the ancient ruins... it'll be an adventure."

Liliana smiled brightly, a spark of excitement in her eyes. "I can't wait! Just think of all the fun we'll have."

Kite felt a rush of determination surge through him. They had their work cut out for them, but moments like this reminded him of why they were on this journey—to uncover the truth, but also to create memories together.

"Come on," he said, nudging her playfully. "Let's head back before the others send a search party after us. I'm sure they're starting to wonder where we are."

Liliana laughed, her hair dancing in the breeze as she turned to follow him. "Alright, but I'm still going to beat you back!"

With renewed energy, they took off down the trail, the laughter and joy of their little adventure echoing through the trees. Kite felt lighter, the worries of their quest momentarily forgotten. He knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together, and that made all the difference.
