This is an effective strategy.
As long as the fleet's strength, compared to the planetary defense system, isn't too disparate, this tactic becomes a legitimate means to take down a well-defended planet.
Of course, it's no good if you can't withstand even one round of enemy fire without collapsing, and your fleet's firepower must be able to inflict definite damage on the defensive system's space stations and star fortresses during brief exchanges. In this way, the defense facilities in the planet's orbit can be gradually worn down.
However, adopting this method means that while the fleet's losses are manageable, they are not insignificant. After all, in war, any unexpected events may occur. In the Alliance's first wave of attacks, they unexpectedly lost an escort ship that was hit continuously by the star fortress's main cannon.
