Lian Manman hesitated for a long time, but in the end, her foodie instincts got the better of her.
"Mom, let's have boiled corn tonight," Lian Manman said as she re-entered the room and greeted Lady Zhang before picking up a basket and heading back to the vegetable garden.
Thanks to the plentiful rain and the adequacy of the fertilizer, the corn in the garden had grown well; most stalks bore two ears, and some even had three.
The ears of corn were wrapped in green husks. Lian Manman chose the larger ones, standing on tiptoes to peel back the husks at the tip of the ears to reveal the kernels, then gently pinched a kernel with her fingernail. Finding them plump with juice, yet not too tender, she knew they would be the most delicious when boiled and still have a nice bite to them.
