Chapter 6 - Star Spirit

"Three days ago, a Level 4.3 high-energy Star Beast attacked XX City, six hundred kilometers away, causing significant civilian casualties and property damage…"

The news anchor reported the latest Star Beast attack. High-level Star Beast attacks seemed to be increasing in frequency.

"Level 4.3?"

A man sitting nearby sighed, "Slightly weaker than Viagra."

Star Beast attacks were becoming commonplace; people were almost numb to it. He looked at Mei. "Kid, did a Star Beast destroy your home too?"

Mei was surprised.

"Huh?"

"I can tell."

The man pulled a sandwich from his briefcase and offered it to Mei. He slumped back, dejected. "I've seen you around for days; you probably don't have a home to go back to."

"Thank you."

Mei accepted but didn't eat it.

"Are you off work? Haven't gone home yet?"

"No."

The man's resentment was palpable. "I went home after work and found my house destroyed. The damage wasn't extensive, but somehow, my house was hit. Talk about bad luck."

Mei thought back. The Level 1 Star Beast Shiro had devoured seemed to only have damaged a few shops on the first and second floors. It was incredibly unlucky to be affected.

"Fortunately, I had insurance, but I'll have to find a new place to live. I didn't have much money to spare; this is another expense…"

The man grumbled about his misfortunes; the Star Beasts and Starkillers were too powerful, making ordinary people feel insignificant.

Mei, however, enjoyed this world; it was far more vibrant than the zombie world. She even had time to use computers.

Boom!

The ground trembled; Star Beast alarms blared. The man stood up and ran; the people around him calmly and efficiently evacuated to shelters.

"Sigh, here we go again."

A vendor sighed deeply, grabbing a freshly made pastry as he ran. A young man manning the stall stared, hurrying after him.

"Sir, my pastry!"

...

Seven days had passed since the Void Wanderers entered the Star Beast world; they were exploring and beginning to systematically hunt Star Beasts.

Unlike the beginner world, the number and density of Void Wanderers in the Star Beast world were significantly higher. Mei encountered many in Shan City.

Compared to those who had only experienced the beginner world, they were generally weaker. Even a Level 1 Star Beast required several of them to defeat, assuming no Starkiller intervention.

Once Starkillers arrived, the Void Wanderers were largely irrelevant; their origins were unknown, making them targets for investigation. The Allied Council was already stressed, unsure where the Void Wanderers came from.

Bang!

A middle-aged man flew backward, crashing through a wall before dusting himself off and resuming the fight against the Level 1 Star Beast.

The beast was strong, its body covered in armored plating; four meters tall and eight meters long, its powerful charge was unstoppable.

"Hey, hurry up and kill it! Someone's going to steal the kill! I heard there's a real headhunter around here!"

"Yeah, yeah, we know! Anyone with a quick move, use it! That headhunter's coming!"

"Watch me!"

Then,

Footsteps approached.

Whoooooosh—

An invisible force swept through, immobilizing several Void Wanderers. They knew immediately—the headhunter had arrived.

Damn it!

The Void Wanderers were furious but dared not complain. This person was ruthless, but undeniably strong.

Bang!

The armored Star Beast's defenses were useless against Mei; its head exploded, and it collapsed.

This seemingly ordinary Star Beast attack was a prelude to something larger. At least five high-level Starkillers were secretly observing, including Lucia's team.

They weren't fools; since they couldn't keep up, they decided to wait for the target to appear, knowing it was hunting Star Beasts.

Their strategy worked.

Secretly, Lucia observed the figure in the battlefield; the distortions prevented her from clearly seeing the target's face, but she could discern its form.

"It is humanoid!"

"That's him!"

Flashy was excitedly impatient. As a Starkiller, he hadn't had a proper fight yet. This was his chance.

"Wait!"

Lucia sensed something amiss and restrained Flashy. A tiny Star Beast emerged from a corner, swallowing the armored Star Beast in one gulp, to her astonishment.

Jayce was furious. "That small Star Beast devoured it. The target isn't a humanoid Star Beast; it's a human. It's raising Star Beasts!"

"Let's capture it first!"

Flashy broke free from Lucia's grasp, launching himself towards Mei like a cannonball. The other Starkillers appeared, surrounding Mei.

Jayce's expression was grim; they'd been wrong. The Level 4.9 energy signature wasn't from a Star Beast, but from a human!

A genuine human!

Only after seeing Mei did they confirm this unbelievable truth: the Level 4.9 energy signature originated from her!

[Main Mission · Phase Two · Complete]

[Points Acquired: 1000]

This was Mei's tenth Star Beast; Phase Two of the main mission was complete. After devouring four more Level 1 Star Beasts, Shiro reached Level 2.4; its growth rate had slowed considerably.

Mei focused on Lucia's team; she was aware of their ambush but didn't care.

"We have no quarrel or hatred, so let's avoid fighting. I'm here to say I have no hostility towards humanity; don't waste your time on me."

"You're not a Starkiller."

"Right."

Mei admitted plainly.

Lucia tried to speak but was interrupted.

"I haven't time for idle chatter. Farewell."

"Wait!"

Lucia's team couldn't let Mei go; this was a Level 4.9 powerhouse; leaving her unchecked was too dangerous.

Mei didn't bother with pleasantries; she used the most direct method.

Boom!

A powerful telekinetic wave swept through, creating a visible shockwave that caused the ground to tremble violently. The overwhelming force instantly rendered everyone unconscious. Lucia and her team collapsed.

Just as Mei was about to leave,

Thump thump!

A heart beat, like a drum, stopped her. She turned, her gaze falling upon the unconscious Flashy. She was intrigued.

Through Voice of All Things, she heard a Star Beast's roar—a ferocious beast was regaining control.

"Interesting."

Mei had suspected that the Starkillers' power came from Star Beasts, but hadn't expected them to share a body with the beast's consciousness.

This was surprising.

Jayce had repeatedly warned Flashy about controlling Viagra; apparently, Flashy hadn't done so, and losing consciousness allowed Viagra to seize control.

This meant Viagra would fully regain its power.

Suddenly,

Flashy's body rapidly grew, his human form transforming into the monstrous visage of a Star Beast until he became Viagra.

Boom!

Eighty-four meters tall and 137 meters long, the colossal creature's weight was immense; a single step caused an earthquake-like tremor.

"Roar!"

A furious roar echoed across the horizon. The restored Viagra unleashed its rage, terrifying Shan City.

Outside the shelters, terrified civilians looked at the monstrous beast roaring to the heavens, their voices trembling. "That's… Viagra?"

"Run!"

"Get to a further shelter! It's not safe here!"

Soon,

Shan City was in chaos.

The destruction of Rong'an City was still fresh in their minds; despair filled the air; people struggled to breathe. Someone screamed, "Didn't they say Viagra was destroyed?!"

"..."

"Damn it!"

Even distant Void Wanderers felt a tremor of fear; they exchanged glances before joining the fleeing crowd.

"I thought this was Beginner Village?"

"You think this is a game? Beginner Village, my ass!"

Mei looked at the colossal beast, sighing at its size, while forming a sphere of highly compressed telekinesis, causing a massive surge in energy levels in the area.

Viagra, venting its rage at regaining freedom, sensed the energy surge and looked at Mei.

Then,

Boom!

In an instant,

The highly compressed telekinetic sphere struck Viagra, piercing it completely. Flesh and blood rained down as a massive hole appeared—its entire abdomen, chest, and half its head were gone.

The deafening roar ceased. Viagra's eyes were filled with disbelief and terror; its remaining half-head stared at Mei before crashing down, collapsing surrounding buildings.

The entire process took less than ten seconds.

A moment later,

Viagra reverted to Flashy's human form; he was unharmed but appeared utterly exhausted.

"What a pity."

Mei shook her head and vanished, having intended to feed Shiro but realizing Viagra had only appeared briefly.

"Huh?"

"Where's Viagra?"

The fleeing crowd stopped, looking around; Viagra was gone, but many had witnessed the previous scene.

"One-hit kill?"

A Void Wanderer's eyes widened in disbelief. The combat power in this world seemed absurd; that was Viagra, a Level 4.5 beast!

When Flashy regained consciousness, he had no memory of what happened after Viagra's return. Looking at the surrounding ruins, he was confused.

"What happened?"

Meanwhile,

Viagra within him was silent. Normally, Viagra constantly roared in his mind, expressing its rage, but now, there was nothing.

No matter how Flashy called out, Viagra remained silent.

A coat was thrown over Flashy; a dusty Jayce and Lucia's team approached. Jayce's face was dark. "Do you know what you did?"

"What?"

Flashy was clueless.

Lucia's tone was sharp. "Come with us."

...

"Level 5.4."

In the online meeting, the Allied Council chairman revealed a terrifying figure. "The latest energy reading from the unknown individual: Level 5.4."

Her identity remained unknown, but her power level was undeniable. While unbelievable, it was true.

Everyone had been worried about Level 5 Star Beasts; now, a Level 5.4 individual had appeared—unexpected.

Her power was unquestionable; a single attack had almost killed Viagra, the strongest Star Beast. Many had witnessed it.

The chairman looked troubled. "Hopefully, as she said, she has no hostility towards humanity. Her power could destroy our civilization, but we can't oppose her."

Lucia asked,

"Then, the actions against her…"

"Are suspended."

"Understood."

Provoking such a powerful being would be foolish. She clearly wished to avoid contact; the Allied Council could only leave her alone.

That she was human, not a Star Beast, and didn't seem to be a power-hungry tyrant was a stroke of luck.

"Next on the agenda: the recent appearance of numerous unidentified individuals. They aren't Starkillers, yet possess significantly greater power than ordinary humans…"

...

Shan City.

Gulp!

Several Void Wanderers and Starkillers were pinned to the ground by telekinesis; Shiro swallowed two dying Level 1 Star Beasts.

Then, a surge of energy flowed into Mei.

[Star Beast ·LV2.5⬆]

[Star Human ·LV2.5⬆]

A fortnight passed quickly. This was Shiro's twentieth Level 1 Star Beast; ten were needed to increase Mei's Star Human and Shiro's levels by 0.1.

"Ooh."

Shiro jumped happily, its personality reverting to its original state. However, a small, flickering pink flower bloomed on its head—a strange sight.

"Alright, let's not waste time."

Devouring Level 1 Star Beasts was too slow. Mei decided to hunt Level 2 Star Beasts for Shiro; she was eager to see how much power this level-up would bring.

She predicted her Star Human level could reach 10 or higher in this mission world, surpassing her telekinesis.

She wondered how powerful a Level 10 Star Human would be and what advanced life form she would evolve into.

The downed Void Wanderers exchanged glances, showing no resistance.

"Why hasn't that powerhouse left yet?"

"I don't know, but her teeth are amazing!"

"Amazing is an understatement!"

Mei had become famous; her instant kill of Viagra spread quickly. The Shan City Void Wanderers didn't mind having their kills stolen.

They only hoped she wouldn't take their heads too.

Boom!

An explosion and a Star Beast's roar echoed nearby. A fifteen-meter-long Star Beast charged towards Mei.

Mei was surprised.

"Such good luck?"

It was a Level 2 Star Beast.

Rumble!

The massive fifteen-meter-long beast charged down the street, smashing cars aside. Several Void Wanderers pursued it.

One Void Wanderer had a glowing orb above his head; a powerful beam struck the Star Beast, tearing its flesh.

"Roar!"

The Star Beast's ferocity increased.

"Captain, someone's ahead!"

Hearing this,

Luo Changkong looked ahead, his expression changing upon seeing Mei; the distorted telekinetic aura was unmistakable.

Before he could react, Mei's telekinesis swept through. Luo Changkong and his team were momentarily stunned.

Bang!

A visible shockwave rippled through the air; they were flung back, and the Level 2 Star Beast exploded, its body severed, lying on the ground, barely alive.

"Shiro."

The word echoed.

Shiro darted to the Star Beast, swallowing it in one gulp. Mei's second upgrade task was complete.

A surge of energy flooded Mei's body; a white light flashed from Shiro, followed by a more powerful surge.

[Upgrade Task 2· Complete]

[Star Beast Level Up]

[Star Beast ·LV4⬆]

[Star Human ·LV4⬆]

Consecutive notifications appeared. Mei's Star Human level jumped to Level 4. She could likely destroy a building with her bare hands; her physical durability was probably sufficient to withstand tank fire.

Most importantly, she was highly sensitive to cosmic energy. Standing under the sun, she could clearly feel herself rapidly absorbing solar energy.

"Star Human…"

At that moment, Mei understood the deeper meaning of this ability. It wasn't limited to sunlight; with further upgrades, she could likely absorb energy from any cosmic source. Her energy would become inexhaustible!

The dazed Luo Changkong scrambled to his feet, cautiously eyeing Mei before leading his team away, unwilling to provoke her.

Their power levels were vastly different; the mere aftershocks of their battle had scattered them; a direct confrontation would be far worse.

This person was not to be trifled with.

His team retreated rapidly. Many found it unbelievable that Mei was a Void Wanderer like them.

"Captain, was that person really a Void Wanderer?"

"If so, she's from the same batch as us, and we're only on our second mission. How could she be this strong?"

The team members were bewildered. Even for a powerhouse, there should be limits; Mei's strength far exceeded their understanding of newcomers.

Luo Changkong was one of the few from a major squad; his strength was exceptional among the new recruits, but not comparable to Mei's.

"I'll have the squad investigate. The Allied Council has no record of her. She's a Void Wanderer like us. Bottom line: don't provoke her."

This was the advantage of joining a large squad—the combined strength and shared intelligence, saving significant effort.

With good luck, they might quickly gain power like Flashy, with the support of their squad. This was a common tactic.

Hyperdimensional Space granted Void Wanderers freedom; squad members usually carried communication devices or tokens. Communication wasn't a problem.

One Void Wanderer speculated, "Perhaps some large squad is focusing on newcomers. Newcomers wouldn't be this strong without high-level equipment or items."

"Maybe."

That made sense.

[Main Mission · Phase Three: Killing Level 1 Star Beasts is insufficient. Kill ten Level 2 Star Beasts to further prove your capabilities.]

[Mission Reward: 2000 points]

This was clearly a bonus mission for newcomers, aligning with Mei's plans to hunt Level 2 Star Beasts.

"Hmm?"

A gust of wind, carrying information through Voice of All Things, caught Mei's attention. She looked up, then vanished.

Several hundred meters above, a tiny, bean-sized spore drifted on the wind, then suddenly stopped mid-air.

Mei hovered above, observing the spore; a creature was curled up inside, currently dormant.

The wind told Mei the spore had fallen from a great height, using air currents to travel many kilometers.

Releasing her telekinetic hold, Mei watched the spore fall. Upon impact, the creature awoke and broke free.

Within moments, the bean-sized creature rapidly expanded into a fifteen-meter-tall monster, beginning to wreak havoc.

Mei realized, "This is the Star Beast's birth process."

This raised a question.

Where did the Star Beast spores come from?

Undeniably, Voice of All Things was exceptionally useful. Mei's telekinesis was powerful for surveillance, but Voice of All Things was superior for gathering clues.

While listening to the wind's whispers, Mei traced the origin of the Star Beast spores, encountering more along the way.

If she could find the source, she could continuously produce Star Beasts, eliminating the need to hunt them.

...

Half a day later,

"This is it."

Mei stood above a massive canyon; its depths were unfathomable, and strong winds constantly blew out. Star Beast spores used these winds to rise and spread across the world.

Danger Sense registered nothing. Mei slowly extended her telekinesis into the canyon, descending into the darkness.

As she descended, sunlight could no longer reach the canyon floor. However, luminous green bacterial mats began to appear, illuminating the canyon's depths.

Pop!

A small bubble burst on a bacterial mat, releasing a Star Beast spore, which was carried by the wind out of the canyon. Mei observed it all.

This was the truth behind the Star Beast's creation!

Finally,

Mei reached the canyon floor. The bacterial mats were soft underfoot, their green glow illuminating the entire area.

Like breathing, the bacterial mats constantly released Star Beast spores.

"Your arrival is sooner than expected."

A voice echoed in the silent canyon. A humanoid Star Beast slowly emerged, politely acknowledging Mei's presence.

This Star Beast wasn't large, roughly human-sized, but its appearance was monstrous—covered in thick, crimson plating, with a powerful tail.

Mei wasn't surprised; she'd sensed its presence. She was surprised it didn't seem hostile.

"You knew I'd come here?"

"With your power, it was inevitable."

This Star Beast was articulate and polite. "I can sense your power is sufficient to destroy this planet. Moreover, you are not my enemy, even if you enjoy hunting Star Beasts."

"Oh?"

Mei found this Star Beast intriguing. "Why?"

"First, let me introduce myself. Humans like to name Star Beasts; I've given myself a name: Tyrant. What do you think?"

"Very imposing."

"Ha ha, right? I think so too. A final boss should be imposing."

Tyrant chuckled. "I was born from these bacterial mats. From the moment I became sentient, I understood my purpose: to destroy human civilization and this planet."

Mei felt a chill.

Destroy this planet?

This confirmed it wasn't the planet's Gaia consciousness; a planet wouldn't destroy itself.

"Unfortunately, even though I'm powerful, far stronger than other Star Beasts, I can't destroy this planet. Compared to that, eliminating humanity is trivial."

"Just as I despaired, you appeared. Your power far surpasses mine; I finally see hope of fulfilling my purpose."

"Me?"

Mei asked, "Why do you think I'll destroy this planet?"

"You won't."

Then,

Tyrant glanced aside. Shiro had silently appeared at the bottom of the canyon, curiously examining the bacterial mats.

"But it might."

"Ooh?"

Hearing its name, Shiro looked up, confused, then returned to examining the spores, eager to eat.

Tyrant explained, "This Star Beast grows by devouring others. As you've seen, the spores are produced by these bacterial mats. Do you know what nourishes these mats?"

"What?"

"This planet's life force."

Tyrant stepped onto the bacterial mat. "The mats' roots permeate the planet, constantly absorbing its life force. If you wish to continue raising this Star Beast, I'm happy to provide ample nourishment for your pet."

Mei understood.

Shiro was, in essence, consuming the planet's life force. If she allowed Shiro to continue growing, it would eventually drain the planet, effectively destroying it.

"What's your suggestion?"

"I won't be polite."

"Ha ha, please, help yourself."

Mei didn't care about the planet's fate. If Shiro needed its life force to grow, then she would drain it dry.

Pop!

A cluster of spores erupted from the bacterial mat. Shiro focused on one, swallowing it instantly. A faint surge of power flowed into Mei.

Mei was slightly surprised.

"Devouring Star Beast spores works too?"

Upon reflection, it made sense. The spores contained immature Star Beasts that no longer needed to absorb nutrients to mature; consuming the immature form was functionally identical to consuming the mature form.

Realizing this, Mei smiled. Shiro's growth rate would accelerate significantly, saving considerable time.

Perhaps due to a lack of social interaction, Tyrant was exceptionally enthusiastic; he presented several Level 3 Star Beast spores to Shiro.

"Little fella, these spores have more nutrients."

"Save those for later."

Mei wasn't in a hurry to feed Shiro Level 3 spores; the mats constantly produced them. She carefully sensed their energy levels.

Since reaching Star Human Level 4, Mei had become highly sensitive to energy, including the planet's life force.

Soon,

Mei found eight Level 2 Star Beast spores. Shiro devoured them instantly, expanding its power and sharing it with Mei.

[Enhancement Successful]

[Star Beast ·LV4.2⬆]

[Star Human ·LV4.2⬆]

As her ability levels increased, the energy required for upgrades also increased; eight Level 2 Star Beasts only resulted in a 0.2 level increase.

After Shiro devoured the spores, two beams of light materialized before Mei—familiar loot drops.

[Ability Acquired: Energy Sensitivity]

[Ability Acquired: Steelhide]

Level 1 Star Beasts had no special abilities aside from their size; only from Level 2 onwards did they begin to exhibit unique abilities.

Eight spores yielded two abilities—a high drop rate. Mei didn't hesitate to acquire them.

[Energy Sensitivity ·LV1: Your energy sensitivity increases, enhancing your interaction with and control over energy.]

——

[Abilities Acquired: Steelhide ·LV1]

[Steelhide ·LV1: Your skin will possess strength exceeding that of steel.]

——

Furthermore,

Mei chose to have Shiro consume only eight Level 2 spores to avoid completing Phase Three of the main mission prematurely.

Completing the main mission might send her back to Hyperdimensional Space. Upgrade tasks offered better cost-effectiveness.

She intended to stall the main mission's progress; failing the main mission was preferable to not completing all the upgrade tasks; the rewards were vastly different.

Adding the Level 2 Star Beast from earlier, Shiro had consumed nine; one more would complete Phase Three.

Mei didn't have Shiro consume more Level 2 spores; she went straight to Level 3. Seeing her nod, Shiro gobbled down twenty Level 3 spores that Tyrant offered.

Twenty Star Beast spores were consumed, transforming into immense energy; Shiro and Mei's Star Human level surged.

[Enhancement Successful]

[Star Beast ·LV5⬆]

[Star Human ·LV5⬆]

Furthermore,

An upgrade task was completed.

[Upgrade Task 3· Complete]

[Star Beast Level Up]

[Star Beast ·LV7⬆]

[Star Human ·LV7⬆]

Mei's Star Human and Shiro's levels jumped from 4.2 to 7; this wasn't merely an upgrade, but an evolution.

Considering Shiro's nature, "evolution" was apt. Leveling up wasn't just about increasing its level but unleashing its potential and the energy it consumed.

"Burp—"

Shiro let out a long belch, a faint smile on its face. Its sesame-seed eyes seemed to convey a disdainful arrogance.

Its personality changed again.

Streams of light appeared before Mei; twenty Level 3 Star Beasts yielded two abilities, three pieces of equipment, and three items.

The equipment and items were useless; Mei stored them. The two abilities were acceptable; she acquired them.

——

At Star Human Level 7, Mei felt her physical body was incredibly powerful; withstanding a nuclear strike would be effortless.

Furthermore, with the massive increase in Star Human level, she could directly perceive the cosmic energy of the stars and planets.

She felt immersed in an ocean of immense energy; her movements created ripples or even tidal waves within this energy ocean.

Whoooooosh—

Mei effortlessly floated in mid-air, driven by this energy, even without using telekinesis; her power was astounding.

"This power…"

Mei manipulated the energy in this ocean; even a slight ripple could shake the entire canyon. She called this ubiquitous cosmic energy "star energy."

Witnessing this terrifying power, Tyrant was awestruck. He knew Mei could kill him instantly with a thought.

Mei slowly descended, her telekinesis gathering a large number of Level 3 Star Beast spores. She addressed Shiro. "Let's expand your stomach and eat. Can you handle more?"

"Ooh."

Shiro grinned, indicating it could handle more. It opened its mouth wide and devoured the spores; the energy surged into Mei.

The frantic consumption began!

[Star Human ·LV8⬆]

Countless streams of light swirled around Mei. She stored the equipment and items; the abilities were immediately acquired, rapidly increasing the number of her abilities.

Then, after reaching the maximum number of abilities, a massive ability merge occurred.

[Detectable Mergeable Abilities]

[Ability Merge Complete]

[Ability Acquired: Star Spirit ·LV8]

Not only the abilities from the Star Beasts but also Night Vision, Danger Sense, Extreme Burst, Voice of All Things, and even Level 10 Telekinesis were merged into Star Human, creating a new ability.

Star Spirit!

The merged abilities effects didn't disappear; the new ability made Mei far stronger, transforming her into a life form far exceeding humanity.

The combination of star energy and psionic energy created a new, advanced life form. Mei remained flesh and blood, but her physical strength was beyond imagination.

Immersed in the ocean of star energy, Mei could now, with a mere thought, create tidal waves within this energy sea, capable of crushing planets.

She could perceive and manipulate all the planet's energy; energy was as vital to her as life itself, obeying her commands.

Star Spirit was a favored child of the cosmos. On this planet, she was its master, a part of nature, a manifestation of cosmic energy.

Tyrant sensed the tremendous energy Mei now effortlessly controlled; he felt she had changed, becoming somehow closer.

But within the ocean of star energy, nothing escaped Mei's perception—not only events on this planet but also the entire system. If she wished, she could instantly travel anywhere within the system via the star energy.
