After she spoke, that nurse urged James Black to follow her forward quickly as the hospital elevator was overcrowded. Since it was just the third floor, the nurse led James Black up the stairs.
They came face-to-face with another nurse descending the stairs. After exchanging a brief greeting, the nurse who was leading James Black asked, "Sister Chen, did the patient make it through? This mister is a relative of that patient, I'm just about to take him upstairs."
The slightly older nurse glanced at James Black, then let out a soft sigh and shook her head, "We did everything we could, but the patient passed away three minutes ago."
The foot that James Black had lifted suddenly felt as heavy as a thousand pounds, hanging in mid-air, unable to descend.
