I let go of my oldest son's hand and motioned for him to eat. He needed his calories. Knowing him, he probably didn't eat much at work. Him thinking of his late pa probably didn't matters either.

[Years ago]
I smiled as I finished makin' some watermelon slushies for my boys and me. When I went to look for my husband and son, so I went to look for them at the patio where I knew Xander would be.
The night was warm, and the cicadas were makin' a symphony of sound. The fireflies danced around, their tails glowin' like tiny lanterns.
Xander was seated where I expected, watchin' fireflies, while Saffron had fallen asleep by his side.
Xander's face was illuminated by their light, a peaceful and almost ethereal look on his features. He noticed me and smiled.
"Hey, love," he said softly, his voice aloof yet warm.
I walked over, careful not to wake Saffron, and handed Xander a glass of slushy. "Here, ya both look like ya could use a refreshment."
