Chapter 5 - The King's Secret

The baby was crying, lay still on the bed, its black eyes filled with tears...

The king's face was etched with deep worry and concern as he ordered the royal guard to take the midwives away. He knew it was the only way to keep the secret of his son's true nature hidden from the world. The midwives had seen the child's transformations, and he couldn't risk them revealing the truth. The king's mind raced with the consequences of his son's condition being discovered. He knew that the court and the people would not understand, and Adam would be ridiculed and ostracized.

As the midwives were led away, the king turned to Elara, the loyal servant who had been tasked with caring for the child. "Name him Adam," he said, his voice firm but laced with a hint of sadness. It was the name he and Atarah had chosen for their son, and he hoped that it would bring him comfort in the difficult times ahead. Elara nodded, her eyes filled with compassion. She knew the weight of the king's secret and the burden that Adam would carry. She vowed to protect the child with her life, to keep him safe from those who would seek to harm him.

As the days passed, Adam grew stronger, but his transformations became more frequent. The king knew that it was because the child struggled to control his emotions, and he feared for his son's safety. He kept Adam hidden away in a separate and heavily guarded quarter of the palace, away from the prying eyes of the court and the cruel whispers of his other children. The king knew that his son's isolation was necessary, but it broke his heart to see Adam alone and scared.

Katherine, the king's new wife, seemed kind and gentle, but Adam knew the truth. She was an evil stepmother, who resented him for the special attention he received from the king. Her children, Grace and Andrew, were just as cruel, taunting Adam whenever they could. Only Chloe, the youngest, showed him kindness, but even she was kept at arm's length by the king's orders. Adam longed for connection and friendship, but it seemed like an impossible dream.

Adam's only friend was Sebastian, Chris's son, who didn't know the truth about Adam's secret. They would play together, but Adam always had to be careful, hiding away whenever he felt the transformation coming. He struggled to control his emotions, to keep his true nature hidden, but it was a constant battle. Adam felt like he was living a double life, pretending to be normal while hiding his true self.

As the years passed, Adam grew more isolated, excluded from royal gatherings and family dinners. He was a secret, a shame that the king kept hidden from the world. Adam felt like a prisoner, trapped in his own life. He longed to be free, to be himself without fear of judgment or rejection. But for now, he was stuck in this lonely existence, forced to hide his true nature from the world.

The king visited Adam in secret, bringing him gifts and trying to comfort him. But Adam knew that his father was torn, caught between his love for his son and his duty to protect the kingdom. The king's visits were always brief, and Adam was left alone once again, wondering why he was cursed with this strange and frightening condition.

As the days turned into weeks, Adam's transformations became more frequent and more intense. He struggled to control his emotions, but it seemed like the more he tried, the worse it got. He felt like he was losing himself, consumed by the darkness within. The king's secret was suffocating him, trapping him in a life of loneliness and fear...

One day, a grand event took place in the palace, requiring the presence of all members of the royal family. The king had no choice but to allow Adam to attend, and to his surprise, Adam was overjoyed at the opportunity. Adam had always felt like an outcast, hidden away in his isolated quarters, and he saw this as a chance to finally feel like a part of the family.

As the event began, Adam tried his best to compose himself, struggling to keep his emotions in check. He knew that one wrong move could reveal his secret, and he was determined to keep it hidden. To his surprise, he made it through the event without incident, and he felt a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Feeling emboldened, Adam decided to take a chance and wander through the palace hallways, hoping to catch a glimpse of the world beyond his isolated quarters. But as he turned a corner, he was confronted by Katherine, his evil stepmother.

Katherine's eyes narrowed as she looked at Adam, her voice dripping with malice. "You're an evil child, Adam," she hissed. "You caused your mother's death, and you'll only bring misfortune to the king." Adam felt a surge of anger and hurt, but he tried to keep his emotions in check, knowing that Katherine was trying to provoke him.

Katherine continued to taunt Adam, trying to guess his secret, but Adam remained silent, refusing to give her the satisfaction. But as the conversation went on, Adam felt himself starting to lose control. He knew he had to get away from Katherine before he transformed, and so he turned and ran, fleeing to the safety of the king's study.

As he burst into the study, Adam felt the transformation taking hold, his body contorting into its ugly, monstrous form. He collapsed to the floor, overcome with sorrow and despair, and began to cry.

Just as Adam was losing himself in his tears, he heard the sound of footsteps approaching from outside the study. He froze, wondering who it could be, and whether they would discover his secret.

Kate was filled with joy, knowing she had accomplished her mission of crushing Adam's spirit.

Meanwhile, Sebastian was searching for Adam, worried about his friend's whereabouts.

Adam, still in his monstrous form, lay on the floor, tears streaming down his face, as the footsteps drew closer and closer...
