Captain Lain was devastated by her helplessness to stop the creature, her power insufficient against its might. She could only watch as many people died, unable to intervene.[1]
In truth, that was how things went about most thaids. They were simply too strong for a single person to face them.
She knew it wasn't her fault. No one could have done anything different in her same situation, but she couldn't stop thinking about how things would have turned out if she had trained more.
But she was a soldier, and those thoughts quickly died in front of those pertaining to another matter: the beast wasn't dead yet.
It had been weakened, but it was nonetheless alive, trying to escape. If that wretched thing had done that since the beginning, nothing like this would have happened. It might have kept living, and so would the soldiers.
There was no escaping death now. The warriors surrounded the animal and attacked.
