Jerusalem
In the night, Abbott Jeromy and Brother Philemon left the monastery heading to the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Along the way, they changed from the carriage that was transporting them to another one. This other carriage featured a wooden body with a tarpaulin covering the sides. It was drawn by two horses of Arabian stock.
The coachman of this other carriage was an old Arab man of about sixty years with a long beard that came up to his chest. His hair was saggy as if it has never been combed in a long time. And he wore a black robe which was similar to what most men in the region wore.
The carriage they changed into was looking old and run down just from its appearance. Despite the darkness, one could see that it was beaten down. Brother Philemon wanted to protest against the choice of changing carriages but he held himself back and went along with what his superior had chosen.
