Today is Friday, the last day of the week before the weekend.
I was excited since I had plans to go to the gym after school with some friends. I'm going to stay at a friend's house on Saturday, and on Sunday I plan to finish the first volume of my novel.
I walk into class with a cheerful tone, "Good morning!" It was pretty early so most of the seats were empty.
Some of the students that have arrived, turned to me and greeted me, though, not with the same enthusiasm as I did.
"Good morning, Ukiyo," said a girl with glasses.
"Bit early isn't it, bro?" One of my friends who was laying on the floor asked.
I walked to my seat, and placed down my bag. I usually arrive later when almost everyone has already arrived.
"Those sleepless nights playing ranked finally caught up to me, I guess. I slept at 7 pm last night." I would normally only get 3 hours of sleep thanks to the guy right in front of me.
He was the type of guy to say that we can't end the night with a game like "that" after winning 15 games in a row.
The guy got up, giving me a sheepish laugh "Anyways, have you done the English homework?"
"Sure, wanna copy?"
"Definitely!"
As the morning sun rose, the class seats began to fill with students, and I engaged some of them in idle humorous conversation.
Some talking about what happened in other classes, some talking about what happened outside of school.
Before I knew it, class had already started. I was sitting at the middle front, giving me a perfect view of the whiteboard. Call me a nerd, but sitting at the front definitely helped me focus.
Though the downside was I can't sit with the boys, since they all want to sit at the back. So my deskmate was a girl, Aika.
She was the class vice-president, but when it came down to it, she was the one to inform the class of events or businesses, while the actual class president just managed them.
She was shorter than me by exactly 1 cm. Her expression can be… expressive. When she's surprised you could tell, when she's frustrated she stomps her feet. It's honestly really cute.
And because of that expressiveness, she's able to speak to the entire class with ease.
The teacher was in front of the class jotting down notes and materials of the new subject, Thermodynamics.
"Everyone please turn to page 108." She looked up from the book, scanning her eyes across the classroom. "Saki! Read question 8."
Saki, who looked like she was about to collapse out of sleepiness, was jolted awake. She flipped through the pages and asked her deskmate what the page was.
"Um…An astronaut is conducting a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS), where they encounter a pressurized canister filled with an unknown gas. The canister has a volume of 5 liters and is initially at a pressure of 10 atmospheres. The temperature of the gas inside the canister is 273 K.
a) If the astronaut brings the canister inside the ISS, where the pressure is maintained at 1 atmosphere, what will be the new volume of the gas?
b) Calculate the final temperature of the gas inside the canister once it equilibrates with the pressure inside the ISS.
c) Assuming the gas behaves like an ideal gas and the astronaut is wearing a space suit with a volume of 20 liters, how many liters of the gas from the canister can the astronaut bring inside the space suit before reaching the maximum capacity?"
As Saki was drowsily reading the question, I was already taking out a piece of paper to calculate both a and b.
"Thank you, Saki." The teacher looked at her with a deadpan, patient face. "If you feel drowsy, you're welcome to wash your face."
"No, miss, I feel fine," the girl insists.
The teacher then turns to the class if anyone can solve and explain the answer before she does. "Alright, who wants to do questions a, b, or c?" She asks, holding up the Whiteboard marker.
I was flying through this problem, I remembered all of the formulas and I skipped the unnecessary arithmetics.
Seeing me jot down my equations, Ayano leaned over my shoulder to see what I'm doing.
"How are you so smart, Ukiyo?"
I was taken aback by the sudden praise. Embarrassed and nervous being watched by her, my face starts the turn red and my ears started to feel hot for some reason.
"Oh… yo─you know… I just paid attention that's all," I answered her, trying my damn hardest to hide my flushed face.
After finishing all three questions, I raise my hand. "Teacher! I'd like to try."
"Go ahead."
But as I was getting up from my seat, the floor started to glow.
'Is this a summoning circle? Hell nah, I'm not about to be some kingdom's Hero (slave).'
From my years of reading Light Novels, this was not a great sign. I instinctively knew the risks associated with this procedure.
I tried to immediately bolt out of the class, but my left leg got caught on one of the table's legs, and I tripped.
'Fuck me.'
As I see that the glow is intensifying, I curse at what I think I'd see on the other side.
For a fraction of a second, I felt heat, then another, I felt nothing.
*wish whoosh!*
The cold, hard and flat floor of the classroom felt different. It felt uneven and rough. It felt like… sand?
As I slowly opened my eyes, I could feel the warm sand sticking around my eye. The sounds of waves splashing and folding. The clear sun beaming down on me.
"Ah, you're awake," the sultry voice of a woman entered my ears, along with the slurping sound of sucking on a straw. "Welcome to the afterlife."
I raised my head, brushing the sand off of my face. As I look up, I see a woman of yellow hair and red eyes. She was wearing a skimpy black bikini that didn't do a good job of covering her sexy body.
She had animal above her head, three fluffy tails, and there were red lines and symbols on her body.
She was sitting on a beach chair under a beach umbrella. A cocktail glass was placed on the table next to her.
"Afterlife?"
"Yes." She waved her hand and the water from the ocean floated to form a display. "You and your friends were the victims of an attempt to create a gate that'll give them access to the 5th dimension."
I slowly blinked at her in confusion. So, what was that magic circle? Was I not about to be summoned as a Hero (slave)? And is this woman some type of goddess?
The woman narrowed her eyes, after which she gave me a soft smile. "No, I'm not a god. I'm just someone who administers a few of the many worlds that exist in the universe, though there are trillions of them."
"Can you read my mind?"
"I can, but I don't need Telepathy to know what you're thinking. I can see the minor changes in your facial expressions and body language coupled with the information I have about you to know what you're thinking?"
"So you're not a goddess, but you know everything about me?"
She picks up the cocktail glass and sips it with those plump pink lips. "I was given the information about all 41 of you by the Overseer of your world. And since you died because of something that happened from my world, he told me to resurrect you in my world."
My mind was spinning trying to understand this situation. In another universe, someone was trying to create a wormhole between my world and theirs, but it wasn't stable so it collapsed and killed everyone in the classroom.
The Overseer of my world wasn't happy with that so they talked to this woman who is the Overseer of the other world to bring us back from the dead but this time, in her world.
"Okay, I think I got it. So why am I brought here? Surely I'm not just here for you to dump exposition, right?"
"Right on," she winks at me. The water display then changes. What was once displaying images now, displayed words. "If I were to drop you into my world as you are now, you'd be dead before you could even establish your new life. So I'll be giving you the Battlesong Console."
There were four sections: Class, Battlewill, Magic, and Skills. There were many options, but some of them were glowing, some were not.
"Do those mean that they're unavailable?"
"Indeed. You are the last person to have arrived since you were the last to die in that classroom. Though the differences are in the milliseconds. The ones that are blacked out are the ones that your friends have already picked."
"Well, these are some shitty selections, eh?" I looked at the board. There were some awesome options like the [Champion] Class, [Earthshatter] Battlewill, [Barrier Formation] Magic, and a [Forgery] Skill.
And some of these options seem rather unbalanced. The [Champion] Class makes it so that everything the user does just works out, [Barrier Formation] is able to separate anything by placing a barrier between them, and [Forgery] could replicate Skills and duplicate weapons.
"I apologize but I'm not allowed to give you more options that are already displayed on here," the Overseer says, her fox ears drooping down.
I look at the leftover options for me, and oh boy there were some "fun" options. There was a [Servant] Class which makes me stronger when I'm acting under someone's orders, [Grease] Magic which makes things slippery, [Yo-yo Fighting] Battlewill that gives proficiency with yo-yos, and the Skills are just ordinary actions like [Sweeping] and [Jumping]
"This is beyond trash! What are these?"
"I'm so sorry!" The Overseer got up from the chair and bowed. Her enormous breasts were swinging as she got up, and from this angle, I could see her cleavage. "I was only allowed to use a portion of my power to create these, and the ones that you see were leftovers from creating the other abilities."
I click my tongue. "I'm working with scraps here." I looked at the available Skills and Classes on the board. I carefully read through every single option displayed.
"I'm sorry, hopefully you'll be able to meet with the others quickly."
I can only pick 6 abilities, whether that be Battlewill, Magic, or Skills. "Alright, I'm just about finished."
The Overseer slightly widens her eyes at my choices. "Oh? I can see what you're thinking with those Skills, your Magic would be convenient for transporting objects, you didn't really have a choice with your Battlewill, and your Class would definitely help with somehow making these abilities work," She finishes analyzing my selection.
"What happens now?"
"For me to wish you good luck and a goodbye," she leans in and kisses me gently on the lips. I close my eyes, leaning in deeper.
I felt her lips moving away, and I opened my eyes. But I was no longer on that sunny beach. The beautiful view of the Overseer in that bikini was gone.
I was sent to the other world.
