"Your people can find their mates," I said again, thinking of what Odie had said. "You have no souls... Not like we do."
"For most of my kind, that's true, but not for us," Jasper didn't take back his photos, though the others did. "Everyone under my command does have their soul, or, as close to it as we can."
"How many do you have under your command?" David asked, having much more experience than the rest of us in military affairs.
"Five thousand," he said, as if it were nothing. "No one else is allowed to join us."
"How do you manage that?" Randy looked skeptical, and I felt slightly out of place. This was military talk, and I was out of my depth. "And my legion is considered... untouchable is the best term for it. The accident changed us in other ways, too, and they found out quickly that anyone who joined was also affected by it. My superiors stopped placing anyone with us, but we're good at what we do. So, they kept us instead of casting us out."
