The hospital kitchen had slowly become a meeting room for us. More than once in the past months, it's where we'd ended up having serious discussions, and today was no exception. Nefera sat safely in my lap, her legs draped over mine as Cabe poured the cut carrots into the bowl for Trip. I know Nefera can look at him and only sees Odette, but I can't. It's easy for me to call him Cabe, even though I know he or she doesn't care either way.
Nefera wanted to talk to Jai, but the rooster wasn't having it without eating first. I'd think it was funny if we weren't in the thick of it. What happened in the hall wasn't a good thing, but my thoughts weren't concerned with the political threat Simon was making. Nefera handled it better than I would. She hadn't apologized and didn't cow to Simon's attempts to intimidate my pack. The threat of war wasn't something anyone should want, but if it came, we'd fight it. Yet, she'd defused the situation and emerged as the dominant one.
