Although the Berger family's Eastern masters didn't regard slaves as human beings, there were also many slaves who didn't consider themselves human either. They had compromised, no longer sought to live with dignity, and for the sake of avoiding toil, they had abandoned the supreme glory they once enjoyed in the Lower Realm and given up their own dignity. They merely wished to scrape by, to satisfy their hunger or male and female desires.
The newcomers didn't go to register, but many of the veteran slaves eagerly jostled to sign up for male servitude.
In their hearts, being able to enjoy women, not having to go down into the mines to work, and being able to eat was a matter of joy worth fighting for; therefore, the registration caused an uproar. Some who pushed forward and crossed the safety line were beaten to death by several strong men and then hung up on wooden stakes to dry.
