Although the Berger family's Eastern masters didn't regard slaves as human beings, there were also many slaves who didn't consider themselves human either. In their hearts, being able to enjoy women, not having to go down into the mines to work, and being able to eat was a matter of joy worth fighting for; therefore, the registration caused an uproar. Some who pushed forward and crossed the safety line were beaten to death by several strong men and then hung up on wooden stakes to dry.
