Dr. Veracious waited patiently for me to say what I was hesitant to say, and that motivates me. "How?"
He smiled slightly. "One step at a time," he said. "Today?" he looked at me. "You grounded yourself. You brought yourself back."
My breathing is shaky. "That's it?" I ask.
He nods. "That's everything," he replied, smiling. "For today, that's everything."
I blink in disbelief. I can't believe that was everything. I'm still in a daze. After everything I had said? Everything I had felt? I can't help but think, was that enough? I look at Dr. Veracious; he's just smiling at me. He didn't rush me to understand, but instead let me sit in the quiet of the moment, as if he were permitting me to accept that even the most minor steps mattered. A soft knock at the door broke the silence. A nurse peeked in, holding a small, sterile storage bag.
