Chapter 3 - The Living Among the dead

Year 2000

Holly Drive; Central City.

Pulse pounding, Eobard Thawne staggers out of the Allen House, he's in pain and bleeding and he has broken who knows how many bones at the hands of Barry Allen, and yet he's smiling. He's done it. He finally defeated him. The fight that spanned centuries is no more and he is the last man standing. "Ha ha!" It's almost too good to be true but he'd done it.

When he'd finally learned The flash's real name, he'd known what needed to be done in order to rid himself of this bothersome enemy of his but still perhaps because he would miss their battles, he decided to have one last battle with The Flash in Central City. He flashed a small nostalgic smile at the thought of that Earth–shaking battle. They had turned the skies of Central City red and still no one won. He couldn't help but doff his hat to his late rival, that man had been one tough bastard.

He'd grown up hearing tales about the Flash and his heroics, he had his posters on the wall growing up. He even got all the merchandise from the Flash Museum. He'd imagine all those earth shaking battles in his mind, with Gorilla Grodd, The Reverse Flash, The Thinker, even Cicada, the only one that got away, Harrison Wells, the Flash's mentor. it would probably not be too far from the truth to compare The Flash to his first love. That was how much he idolized him, so he even recreated The Flash's accident to gain his powers and become his partner and work with him. He even patterned his suit as a reverse of the Flash's in order for there to be contrast and yet…

Yet…just his first trip through time and he discovered just how foolish he had been, he'd gone back to see those battles in person, perhaps befriend him before he became such a mighty speedster that he could only look up to but on getting to the past, he discovered that he was very, very wrong. They were not destined partners. He had been recorded in the annals of history as Eobard Thawne, the Reverse Flash, the greatest enemy of the Flash and to make matters worse, somewhere down the line, even his name was erased, with just his title as the Reverse Flash.

The Reverse Flash that he'd grown up despising due to his animosity with The Flash, was him. What a joke he was. It made me mad. Very mad. He embraced it. He embraced the anger, the pain, the hate, the disappointment, he took it all in and used it to fuel his speed turning the positive to negative. His own unique speed force. His eyes turned crimson, his lightning turned red. He had truly become the Reverse Flash.

Eobard slipped away from his nostalgic thoughts. Thinking about them would do no good. His vision flickers as he summons his speed ready to dash back to his time and enjoy the rewards of a world without The Flash.

"Arghhh!" Before he can take a few steps, he stumbles, the speed force vanishes, leaving him human. He turns in shock, "Gideon!" he screams, "What just happened?"

A holographic female appears in his palm from the projector in his suit. "Calculating Sir…"

"Based on my data, this seems to have been a consequence of killing The Flash"

"What!" He's consumed by rage. He can almost choke on it. "Consequences, what consequences?"

"According to my calculations, The Flash dying has changed the timeline irreparably. Without him, you do not recreate the experiment, you are the inverse of the Flash but in the even where the Flash does not exist, the Reverse Flash will not exist as well…"

She said it all in a monotone voice that vexed him something terrible. If she were human, he wouldn't mind phasing his hand through her to get her to know what it'd feel like to stop existing. Still he paled, this is something he had overlooked, something huge. He turned his attention back to her as she was still saying something.

"…and this is why your connection to the speed force has turned unstable. In this state, you cannot generate the speed required to return to your time."

Each word was like a bolt to the heart. He was stuck here? In this primitive place? This was living among the dead. He felt aggrieved. 'Why, why, why must you bully me so. I merely wanted to erase my nemesis. Isn't this punishment too much?' He shook his hand towards the sky.

'What should he do?'

'Can he still get back?'

'In this situation, for how long can he keep his speed?'

His mind began to kick in, all he needed was a speedster that would willingly open up a breach for him and with a time pod, he could pilot himself back to his time. It would be better if the speedster could willingly take him back to the future but for that to happen, the speedster would have to be his equal or even faster and in his condition, he wanted to eliminate all hostile maneuvers.

'But which speedster, The Flash is dead, perhaps Wally West? Nah, that'll draw the attention of that psycho; Savitar, if he's still alive that is. But who then…Bart and Nora are no doubt wiped from existence as well and even if they aren't, they're not from this time...Hmm? How about him, that would be perfect. Seems I'll be seeing you soon Mr. Heart'

He smiled and sped off and somewhere in Central City, there was once again a clap of thunder that was not thunder and Godspeed was born.
