Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 376. Spy III

The man kept his posture stiff. "Yes."

Darius's polite smile remained, but there was a growing curiosity in his eyes. "And which noble sent you?"

The man hesitated for too long.

Angel took a slow sip from his glass, allowing the silence to stretch uncomfortably before saying, "I'd like a name."

The man's jaw twitched. "Lord—"

"You're taking too long," Angel cut in, his smirk disappearing entirely.

The man inhaled sharply, realizing he was backed into a corner. He had no name to give. And if he did, it would be another lie. The delegation was watching now, waiting for an answer, their curiosity shifting into something more pointed.

Darius finally spoke, his tone remaining calm but firm. "If this was a private arrangement, why was my delegation not informed?"

The man struggled for a response, his fingers curling at his sides.

Angel leaned in slightly. "It's over," he murmured. "Tell me the truth, or I promise, you'll regret holding out."

The man swallowed, his composure fracturing. He could see it now—there was no way out. No excuse that would hold. No noble from Harmonia had sent him.

His lips parted, but before he could speak, one of the Black Devil soldiers discreetly pressed something cold against his side. A warning.

Angel smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "Go on. Say something smart."

The man's voice was tight. "I was sent to observe. To confirm things about you. That's all."

Angel arched a brow. "And who wants that confirmation?"

The man hesitated again, but under Angel's unwavering gaze, he finally muttered, "I need to speak with you in private."

Angel's smirk didn't waver, but there was no amusement left in his eyes. He tilted his head slightly, studying the man, weighing his words. A private conversation? That only made things more suspicious.

"Fine," Angel said, his tone even. "But Lord Darius stays."

The man's jaw tensed. "This is sensitive information—"

Angel cut him off with a sharp look. "If a noble from your kingdom is trying something nasty, the king needs to be informed. And if you're lying, the king needs to be informed too."

Darius folded his arms, his expression unreadable but sharp. "I agree. If this concerns Harmonia, I have every right to hear it."

The man exhaled sharply, clearly unhappy with the decision, but he knew he wasn't in a position to argue. His eyes flicked toward the Black Devil soldiers, still flanking him like silent shadows, and he swallowed his pride. "Fine."

Angel gave a brief nod to the guards stationed at the edges of the ballroom. They understood immediately. The room was too public for this kind of conversation, and the last thing he needed was whispers spreading before he had the truth.

With a flick of his wrist, Angel signaled for the group to move. The Black Devil soldiers remained close as they guided the man and Lord Darius through a discreet side corridor leading to a more private meeting chamber. The walk was tense, silent, the only sound the faint echo of their footsteps against the polished marble floors.

Once they reached the chamber, Angel entered first, scanning the space instinctively. No windows. One entrance. A single chandelier overhead casting flickering light across the stone walls. Secure enough.

He turned, folding his arms as he leaned against the heavy wooden table at the center of the room. Darius stepped in next, closing the door behind them, his expression firm. The Black Devil soldiers stationed themselves at the entrance, ensuring no interruptions.

Angel gestured lazily toward a chair. "Sit."

The man hesitated before pulling the chair out and lowering himself into it. His posture was stiff, uneasy.

Angel arched a brow. "Start talking."

The man inhaled deeply, glancing at Darius before turning his attention back to Angel. "I wasn't lying when I said I was sent to confirm something about you."

Angel exhaled through his nose, unimpressed. "You expect me to believe that one of Harmonia's nobles sent you to spy on me? For what?"

Darius's eyes narrowed. "I would also like an explanation."

The man's fingers twitched slightly, a small but telling movement. He was nervous.
